Though Philip had a good childhood and loving parents, he began using drugs and alcohol at just 16 years old. What started young quickly turned into years of addiction and repeated time in prison.

In the midst of that cycle, the Lord brought Philip to UGM. He stayed in our men’s shelter for a week and received meals, clothing, and a safe place to rest. While there, another guest told him about the Men’s New Life Program, and Philip made the decision to enroll.

“I’ve learned how to love others with humility. I’ve loved being able to hear the gospel and learn about God’s offer to redemption through Jesus Christ. I thank God for UGM and for the work in my life to make me a better man.”

Philip is now pursuing employment and attending a local church, staying at our Redemption House as he prepares for his future with great hope. 🙌

Thank you to our donors for giving men like Philip a second chance. Your support funds services like our Men’s New Life Program, and provides a refuge for real people who need real help. 🙏

Isabella was evicted from her apartment and found herself sleeping in her car near the Union Gospel Mission.

Welcomed to our evening service, she received “really good” food and said that the spiritual emphasis was “the best part of visiting the Mission.”

The next day, Isabella enjoyed the Women’s Clothes Closet, which included a bible study, clean clothes, hygiene, showers, and a haircut. That’s where she got her fresh new look!

While Isabella is “looking forward to whatever God decides,” she is praying for new housing and a job. Please pray that the Lord would provide for her as we assist meeting her practical needs.

She wants to say “Thank you, Donors! You are truly a blessing, really!”

Thank you for being there for Isabella and other women like her who need help and hope in times of great hardship.

Who doesn’t like receiving a handmade gift? 🤷🏻‍♀️ But how much more impactful is it to receive one when you’re a man fighting for victory over addiction in a recovery program?

You should have heard the surprised gratitude from the men when we told them that an entire high school full of students had gotten together and painted bible verses for them to keep. 🥹 These men are away from family and loved ones, striving for a better way of life, often facing loneliness, discouragement, and weariness like we all do when battling our sin.

💙 Thank you to the students from for bringing smiles to this classroom and for showing these men that people truly care about them!

Please be praying for these men - that the Lord would use these verses to encourage them and draw them towards the rest of Scripture. 🙏🏽

You have a message from Pastor Robert Briggs...

“The social crisis of homelessness and addiction has many elements to it.

Whilst our politicians seek many solutions and develop various programs, we remain convinced that the deepest problem for all is a saving relationship with God. We cannot eradicate poverty and homelessness from our society, but we are seeking to alleviate it.

At Union Gospel Mission we believe we are a “downtown arm of the church” in Sacramento. Our partnership with individual Christians and local church communities is vital.

We have witnessed several deaths on the nearby streets during 2025. This is a reminder of why we are here...”

Mission life is family life 💙 Let’s wish Miguel a happy birthday!! 🥳

Seen and valued - that’s how we want every man in our program and every homeless guest to feel when they step onto our campus.

That means birthdays matter - the day the Lord brought each of us out of the womb.

May the Lord bless Miguel in this new year of life, his first full year after graduation! 😎

*Jackie’s struggle with alcoholism began after the tragic death of her twin sister. Following the example of her parents, she turned to alcohol in an attempt to ease her grief and pain.

She lived on the sidewalk outside the Union Gospel Mission for seven years, attending the Clothes Closet and our evening services. “I went in every night for chapel service and dinner. Such good food!”

But today, Jackie is rebuilding her life! She is now clean and sober, looks much healthier, and has been living in her own apartment for a year!

She hopes to reconnect with her children and brother, and is looking for a church near her apartment. She’s grateful and full of hope.

She wants to give you, our donors: “An abundance of thank you’s! Big open arms to give you all hugs. This place saved my life!” 💙

Thank you for caring for Jackie during some of the hardest times of her life, and being that stepping stone she needed to find hope.

Human beings are perishing on the streets of our city. Death is a reality for all, but on the streets around the Mission, it seems to be a closer enemy. Whether from violence, drugs, or alcohol, people are in danger of being lost forever every single day.

Yesterday, a man tragically died on the streets outside our Mission. Today, his mom and sister came to grieve, putting out letters, flowers, and candles in his memory.

Word spread, and Chris, our Director of Chaplaincy, went out to minister to their hearts, praying with them and comforting them.

We can’t save everyone on the streets - that’s God’s job. But we can be there to minister to the broken and hurting and offer a better way. We can be there to throw them a lifeline amidst addiction, food in times of hunger, and shelter from wind and rain. Most importantly, we can offer them lasting hope in the Gospel of Jesus Christ, that if they repent and believe, they can be saved not just now, but for eternity.

Please pray for this grieving family, that the Lord would comfort them and bring them to Himself. Please pray for our frontline team, our staff, and volunteers who serve tirelessly to minister to the hurting around us.

And pray for those on the street - that the Lord would not just save their bodies from peril, but that He would shower His grace and save their souls.

💙
