πŸ“š Book Rec #4 for Autism Acceptance Month!

Ever watched a child shut down in a crowded, noisy room and wondered what was happening inside their mind? When Things Get Too Loud by Anne Alcott gives us a window into exactly that.

Bo's "Feel-O-Meter" climbs from 1 to 10 as the world around him gets to be too much β€” the sounds, the smells, the overwhelming rush of it all. But when he meets an unexpected little friend, something shifts.

This one is special because it doesn't just tell the story β€” it gives kids and caregivers a visual tool to navigate big feelings together. The Feel-O-Meter makes emotions concrete and approachable, which is exactly what kids who experience sensory overload need. πŸ’™

Whether your child is neurodivergent or neurotypical, this is a book that builds empathy from the inside out.

Perfect for home, classrooms, and therapy settings alike.

πŸ“š Book Rec #3 for Autism Acceptance Month!

Meet Zak β€” a kid who experiences the world a little differently, and who has a lot to teach us about patience, fairness, and what it really means to belong.

Uniquely Wired: A Story About Autism and Its Gifts by Julia Cook tells Zak's story from his own perspective. Bright lights feel overwhelming. Hugs are hard. Arm flapping and spinning are just how he copes. But underneath all of it? His hopes and disappointments are just like any other kid's.

This isn't a story about what's "wrong" with Zak. It's a story about what the world gains when we take the time to understand him. πŸ’™

With practical tips included for parents, educators, and caregivers, this one is as useful as it is heartwarming.

πŸ“š Another Must-Read for Autism Acceptance Month!

Ian's Walk: A Story About Autism by Laurie Lears is a beautifully illustrated picture book that follows Julie, a big sister navigating the very real, very human emotions that come with loving a sibling with autism.

When her little brother Ian wanders off at the park, Julie has to step into his world to find him β€” and in doing so, discovers something powerful: that understanding someone means learning to see through their eyes.

This award-winning story doesn't shy away from the complicated feelings siblings and families experience. It simply holds them with honesty and heart. πŸ’™

A perfect read for families, classrooms, and anyone who wants to better understand what it means to truly see someone for who they are.

Meet Dr. Juanita Hernandez-Morin, Psy.D. β€” Licensed Psychologist and the heart of Bridges of the Mind's South Lake Tahoe office.

Dr. Hernandez-Morin brings nearly two decades of experience working with children and families, with deep roots in trauma-informed, culturally responsive care. She specializes in psychological evaluations β€” assessing cognitive and developmental functioning with the kind of thoroughness and warmth that puts families at ease.

Her path to South Lake Tahoe wasn't just professional β€” it was personal. She traded the Bay Area for the Sierra Nevada mountains to be closer to nature and grow her family, and she brought every bit of her clinical expertise with her. Families in the Tahoe area now have access to high-quality psychological assessments right in their own community.

Expert evaluations. Local care. Families finally getting answers.

ABOUT BRIDGES OF THE MIND

Bridges of the Mind Psychological Services was founded by Dr. Erika Frieze in 2018 in response to her drive to work with and help as many families as possible. In 2019 Dr. Frieze expanded her vision of Bridges of the Mind and grew it into a group practice of clinicians and specialists who are passionate about providing services to our community and region.

At Bridges of the Mind we provide neurodevelopmental assessments for infants through adulthood, specializing in Autism Spectrum Disorders, Intellectual Delays, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Learning Disorders, and Independent Education Evaluations with Expert Witness Testimony. Additionally we offer anxiety and social skills groups for a variety of ages, as well as Barton method reading tutoring.

We continue to grow, adding practitioners and specialists for the community’s needs!
