Just as there are seasons around us, there are seasons within us.
And the season has come to align this page with what is REALLY alive in my world... which means that I’m shifting away from plant-centric marketing and leaning into the holistic, inclusive world of ALL THINGS PERSONAL GROWTH AND EXPANSION. (And yes, I’ve still got BIG love for our plant allies)
Sovereign Journeys is a place for ALL to learn, grow, and transform. Stay tuned for workshop announcements, retreat invitations, and facilitator spotlights that feel you should know about.
Have a workshop or class that you’d like for us to highlight? Tag them below! We’re looking for the BEST that Sacramento and the Bay Area has to offer.

There’s always an edge when we try something new…
For the first time in 7 years, I had to take Bend & Blaze to the park for an outdoor session - and with great uncertainty around how it would go, I can now share that it was sweet and spectacular in all the right ways!
A small group of faithful yogis met me at McKinley Park for a silent disco flow.
We opened with introductions and vulnerable shares since there were only a few of us there…
And ultimately, they made it SOOOO worth the extra work.
Thank you to the real ones who remained devoted to their practice yesterday! WOW - my heart is full!

I grew up in San Francisco, where yoga was EVERYWHERE. A bustling city filled with excitement, noises, smells, and opportunities to lose yourself in ways unimaginable.
My first experience with yoga came from my high school. The Bay School, located in Park Presidio, was known for its progressive agenda and alternative thinking. It was the biggest blessing in my life. I studied music, jazz, dance, and YES - YOGA!
Still reminiscing on my teacher, Ms. P (Who knows if she still teaches there), who offered yoga as an alternative to sports or traditional P.E., which, let’s face it, is a ridiculous concept for artistic, introverted people (especially adolescents) such as myself at that time. My first class still haunts me to this day as the thought of focusing on my breath, feeling a stretch or asana as we say, and allowing distracting thoughts to fade away changed my life forever. Not because it was easy or pleasant, but because it was disturbingly hard.
I struggled through the opening breathing exercises, finding it near impossible to keep my eyes closed. I was the kid in the back, right hand class who couldn’t help but to compare myself with every other student in the room. Was I sitting up straight enough? “Why couldn’t my knees touch the ground in “butterfly”? How is _____ so pretty even when she’s just sitting there? What am I going to do if I get another D+ on my chem labs?”
The struggle was real.
But as I moved through the sun salutations, thoughts faded away, and I became one with my mind, body and spirit. I held poses for slightly longer than what was comfortable, pushing boundaries and keeping a steady rhythm in my breath. Until savasana came. After a beautiful workout and sequence, Ms. P. began to guide us through another meditation as we laid on our mats. Encouraging us to release what we have held on to. To fill ourselves with light and life and love. Her words were so filled with love, I couldn’t help it... my eyes stung - water filling them, wanting to be set free.
Before I knew it, silent tears were pouring down my cheeks. A sweet release from the internal pressure built up from suffering through my parents then-recent divorce and several family deaths. I left the suffering on the mat. Let go of the pent-up frustration and allowed my energy to release and the benefits to wash over me.
That’s when it hit me. This was the point of yoga. This was my practice. My meditation.
To release emotions that had been held near my heart, stagnant for almost a year, was to let go a piece of me that I didn’t realize was holding me back! My journey began at that moment on that mat in that room on that floor. Forever grateful to that Ms. P for awakening the yogi that would one day teach.
