Our Story
I am Karen Reimer, a birth and postpartum doula. I love what I do. I believe that women are strong and capable of any birth they choose. As a doula, I am excited to help you on your journey. I am the proud mother of 3 handsome boys and have 3 beautiful grandbabies. I have had the privilege of attending several births, including those of my grandchildren. Every birth is special to me and to help mamas have babies is my lifes work. You see, I worked in corporate america for quite awhile as a paralegal and now I have the opportunity to do what my heart loves to do. Be a doula and teach yoga. I believe every pregnant woman is beautiful. I also believe that pregnancy, birth and parenthood is a journey. A journey that can bring unconditional love, more challenges then we as women and families ever knew we could face, and undeniable joy. My experience with my own labors and births brings with it a knowledge that may be helpful to you and your family as you approach parenthood. During the pregnancy and birth process families can be inundated with information from the internet, their friends, caregivers and complete strangers that love to tell you what you need to do. As a doula, I am here to help you to process all this information and more. I want you to feel empowered with your choices as a family. The pregnancy part of the equation can be scary and physically painful. A doula and Yoga can help with that. Labor is an exciting time, as you know you will meet your baby soon. It can also bring with it fear, pain and confusion. Doula's can be the best part of your birth team. Let me help you through the labor and birth process by empowering you to make the best decisions for you and your baby. What is a doula? The word "doula" comes from an ancient Greek meaning "a woman who serves," and is now used to refer to a trained and experienced professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to the mother before, during and just after birth; and/or provides emotional and practical support during the postpartum period. Doulas make a great addition to you birth team. She does NOT replace your partner and family. Instead she helps support your partner and family so that they can love and encourage you during the labor process. She also believes in a woman’s ability to birth her baby no matter what direction her birth takes; at home, at a hospital, natural, medicated, VBAC or cesarean section. Numerous studies have documented the benefits of having a doula present during labor. A recent Cochrane Review, Continuous Support for Women During Childbirth, showed a very high number of positive birth outcomes when a doula was present. With the support of a doula, women were less likely to have pain relief medicine administered and less likely to have a cesarean birth. Women also reported having a more positive childbirth experience. Other studies have shown that having a doula as a member of the birth team decreases the overall cesarean rate by 50%, the length of labor by 25%, the use of oxytocin by 40%, and requests for an epidural by 60%. In addition their babies have higher Apgar scores at birth. The role of the doula is never to take the place of partners in labor but rather to compliment and enhance their experience. Doulas can encourage the partner to use comfort techniques and can step in if they need a break. Having a doula allows them to support their partner emotionally during labor and birth. The most important thing a woman needs during labor is continuous support. A doula on your birth team can provide that support.
