International Bereaved Mother’s Day is a day of remembrance and support for mothers who have lost a child, and it is observed on the first Sunday of May each year. This day acknowledges the profound grief of losing a child, no matter the circumstances.
Bereaved Mother’s Day allows mothers to connect with others who have gone through similar experiences, share stories, and offer comfort and support.
Today, we support mothers holding children in their hearts rather than their arms, acknowledging that traditional Mother’s Day can be emotionally exhausting.
This day serves to validate that these women are still mothers, even if their children are not physically present.
How can you support bereaved mothers in this day?
~Light a Candle in honor of their child
~Say Their Name: Acknowledge the child by name in messages.
~Send Support: Send a, “Thinking of you,” or “Gentle Mother’s Day” message to a bereaved mother.
~Participate in memorial walks.
~write letters to your child/children.
~Validate their motherhood: Acknowledge that they are mothers.
~Be sensitive: Understand that traditional Mother’s Day can be painful, and they may choose to avoid celebrations.
~Offer gentle, ongoing support: Reach out to grieving parents, acknowledging that the loss is a permanent part of their lives.
