I was given a helpful reminder about posting my takeaways from the Human Trafficking conference I attended in January. There were multiple speakers that shared insight and their real life experiences. It is important to not only help the current victims, but also identify possible victims of human trafficking. Risk factors of history of sexual abuse, trauma and more are some of the factors that put this population at risk. Additionally, addiction is a form of coping with trauma. The brain has been rewired and makes it difficult to cope any other way with the chronic and severe trauma an individual experiences when a part of this population. What to do? Inform yourself, engage with this population, reach out to those in need and remember it takes one person to provide unconditional positive regard to make a difference.
