๐Ÿ“ŒThe Board recommends creating your BreEZe account after your check has been cashed. This ensures your information links correctly to your BreEZe account.

If you create your account before your check is cashed, you may need to update your BreEZe profile and manually link your DCA records.

Should this be necessary, please refer to this guide, starting at Step 7 (your account may display โ€œUpdate Profileโ€), available on the BBS website for detailed instructions https://bbs.ca.gov/pdf/breeze_create_account.pdf.

๐Ÿ“ฃLicensing Reminder

The Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) kindly requests that registrants refrain from submitting supervision documents or other miscellaneous materials unless they are being submitted as part of a licensure application or in direct response to a specific request from the Board. To ensure efficient handling of all materials, please wait to submit additional documentation until it is formally required.

Applications received BEFORE or ON THE DATES listed below have been completed. If your app was rcvd PRIOR to these dates, please check your email/mail for communication from BBS or testing vendor.

If your app was rcvd AFTER the dates listed, it is pending and has not been evaluated yet. Staff is unable to provide status checks on apps still pending review.

IF YOUR RECEIVED DATE SHOULD HAVE BEEN PROCESSED and you have not received an email, a mailed letter, or cannot look up your associate number on DCA License Search, https://search.dca.ca.gov/, Message the Board at https://www.bbs.ca.gov/about/contact_us.html.

Received date is the date the Board received your application. Apps are processed in date order RECEIVED. If you don't know your RECEIVED date, please consider it approx 1 wk after mailing. SUBMISSION date in Breeze is the date payment was cashiered. Payments can take up to 4 weeks to be processed from date the Board RECEIVED your application.

Pending Associate Apps โ€“ If your app status in Breeze was pending or open and now it is not in your Breeze account, your app has probably been approved. You can check your BreEZe account OR use the License Search feature to see if your associate number has been issued, https://search.dca.ca.gov/. You should receive your certificate in the mail approximately 1 week after it is issued.

You will be emailed if something is missing from your application. If your application was missing items, please provide the required documentation to the Board and if sent from a 3rd party, email the evaluator/unit who notified you of the deficiency. Please allow 2-4 weeks for processing and an update.

๐Ÿ””TIPS TO SUCCESSFULLY SUBMIT AN ASSOCIATE APPLICATION

1. SUBMIT APP TO BBS WITHIN 90 DAYS OF GRADUATING โ€“ To count post-degree hours earned prior to the issuance of your associate number. See 90 Day Rule FAQ for the details, https://www.bbs.ca.gov/pdf/90day_rule.pdf.

2. KEEP YOUR COMPLETED WORKPLACE LIVE SCAN FINGERPRINTING FORM โ€“ this is different from the Live Scan to be completed for your associate application. See 90 Day Rule FAQ above for details.

3. VALID EMAIL ADDRESS โ€“ Use an email address you will have access to after graduation to ensure you receive notices about your application status. It will be used for correspondence through your entire exam & licensure process. To update your email, complete a Change of Address in your BreEZe account, https://www.bbs.ca.gov/pdf/breeze_change_email.pdf.

4. SUBMIT A COMPLETE APPLICATION PACKET โ€“ Make sure to complete all sections on the application to the best of your ability. Missing something small like a signature or address of record will delay your application. Read all the instructions. Keep a copy of your application for your records. Make sure you fill out the check correctly and sign it.

5. MAIL WITH TRACKING & DELIVERY CONFIRMATION โ€“ We are unable to confirm receipt of apps or payments. Be sure to mail with tracking and delivery confirmation.

6. REQUEST TRANSCRIPTS OR PROGRAM CERTS ABOUT THE SAME TIME YOU SUBMIT YOUR APP โ€“ Requesting official transcripts or program certs from your school earlier than when you submit your application, may cause delays. It is recommended to request these items within 2 weeks of submitting your application to BBS.

7. PROCESSING TIMES โ€“ Apps are processed in date order received and standard processing time is 30 days but can be longer during graduation seasons. Follow us on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter for weekly updates.

8. USE THE FAQโ€™s โ€“ Before contacting the Board, we highly suggest reading the FAQโ€™s, https://www.bbs.ca.gov/updates_faqs/faqs.html, and other handbooks on each Applicant page https://www.bbs.ca.gov/applicants/. The more emails the evaluators get, the more time it takes away from processing apps.

IF YOU WILL BE SUBMITTING HOURS UNDER THE 90-DAY RULE PLEASE READ BELOW:

Applicants who graduate on or after January 1, 2020 may only count post-degree hours of supervised experience gained under the 90-day rule if the workplace required the applicant to complete Live Scan fingerprinting prior to gaining post-degree experience hours and the Board received your registration application within 90 days of the qualifying degree award date.

Applicants are required to submit the State of California โ€œRequest for Live Scan Service'โ€ form along with their licensure application. No substitutions or alternative documents will be accepted, as state law mandates this specific form.

Please review the 90-Day FAQ carefully to ensure you fully understand all requirements, as this is the most common cause of deficiencies in licensing applications and may impact the approval of your application. If you have additional questions, please contact the appropriate licensing unit.

๐Ÿ“ฃASW Currently Gaining Hours Toward LCSW Licensure

The LCSW Unit previously misinterpreted the legal requirements regarding supervision hour calculations for ASWs, specifically related to Clinical hours (Box A) on the Experience Verification Form. Since October 2023, the BBS has worked to clarify these requirements, with additional guidance provided in the July 2024 BBS Newsletter.

Effective July 1, 2024, associates must receive two units of supervision in any week where more than 10 hours of direct clinical counseling are performed within a single setting.

โ€ข One unit = 1 hour of individual or triadic supervision, or 2 hours of group supervision.
โ€ข "Direct clinical counseling" includes psychosocial assessment, diagnosis, and treatment (Box A).

Please review your weekly logs! If you provided more than 10 hours of direct clinical counseling at any site on or after 07/01/2024, you must have two units of supervision that week. If not, you may only count up to 10 hours of direct clinical counseling for that week.

For additional information please review questions 25 and 26 in the FAQ:https://www.bbs.ca.gov/pdf/publications/asw_faq.pdf
