Hotel Burned at Sioux City.
In describing a fire which recently destroyed the Mondamin Hotel in Sioux City, Ia., Chief George M. Kellogg writes: “The hotel was located on one of the main corners in the principal part of the city. It covered a ground space of 100×150 feet, was four stories high, built of brick, with partition walls only in the back part. The structure was about forty-two years old. There were no sprinkler equipment, and the only means of escape in case of fire were ropes provided for the guests in each room. It was about 8:25 p. m., when a passerby saw flames in the basement, having started from some unknown cause. An alarm at 8:45 brought out one engine, two trucks and six hose companies. Upon the arrival of the department the flames were found to be burning fiercely in the boiler room. Nearly 5,000 feet of cotton rubber-lined hose was laid and six hydrants located from 150 to 300 feet apart were made use of. Some of the hydrants were four and some six-inches in diameter. The streets at this point are 80 feet wide and carry a 12-inch water main. There was a hydrant pressure ol 100 pounds, and with a 2-inch turret nozzle and 1 1/8 and 1 3/4-inch common nozzles, ten stream’s were maintained until the walls fell in, two hours after the fire was discovered. To be more specific, one Morse turret pipe and four Eastinan nozzles were utilized. The water system is gravity and direct pumping. The value of the building was estimated at $300,000, upon which there was a loss of $105,000, and upon the contents, $195,000. The lower part of the hotel was occupied by a cafe, barber shop, jewelry and drug stores, etc.”

After arriving in Sioux City in 1856, lawyer Asahel W. Hubbard soon became a U.S. District Court Judge and was later the first
Sioux Cityan elected to the U.S. House. When he returned to Sioux City and built the Hubbard House Hotel in 1870,
it was the city’s largest and finest hotel prior to the boom years of the late-1880s and early-1890s.
The Italianate structure featured decorative brack-ets under the eaves and tall, slender windows capped with ornate
U-shaped hoods. In 1887 meatpacking magnate James E. Booge purchased the hotel, renaming it Hotel Booge. It was again re-
named after it was sold in 1895. Hotel Mondamin burned down in January 1912 and the Martin Hotel was built in its place.

Story by Muriel Murphy Mizell:

GRANDFATHER Alfred GUILLAUME WAS A BARBER.
MY MOTHER TOLD ME THAT, AND HE HAD A SHOP ON WEST 7TH STREET.

REMEMBER FROSTY’S ICE CREAM ON WEST 7TH???

I THINK HIS BARBER SHOP WAS IN THAT BUILDING BEFORE FROSTY’S EVER CAME ABOUT. IT SAT ON THE VERY CORNER, WHERE WE WOULD TURN RIGHT TO GO TO SILVER STREET. NEAR HOPKINS SCHOOL WHERE I WENT TO KINDERGARTEN AND THE SPORTS FIELD ACROSS THE STREET!

I CROSSED THE SPORTS FIELD EVERY DAY, ABOUT 4 TIMES A DAY GOING AND COMING FROM ST. BONIFACE.
YES, WE CAME HOME FOR LUNCH.

QUITE A WALK FOR AN HOUR LUNCH! HOWEVER, I WAS NEVER LATE.

AND WE WERE AT CHURCH EARLY FOR MORNING MASS.
THE KIDS AT THE HOPKINS SCHOOL YELLED CATLICKER AT ME EVERY TIME I WENT BY. I JUST IGNORED THEM.
