♾️ Advocate Sarah Howard helps to create safe spaces for discussion and connection with the Valley Mountain Regional Center Support Group she helped launch in 2009.

“Years ago, I attended a group such as this in another area and wanted one in the area in which I lived. I got a few people together to make this happen,” said Sarah. “We are attempting to create a group where everyone feels respected and we have privacy within the group.”

As a facilitator, she brings people together to talk openly, share experiences, and learn from one another in a space built in trust and respect. Sarah was first diagnosed on the Autism Spectrum with Asperger’s Syndrome at 30.

“I began the journey to find out why I was different and what I needed to help me,” said Sarah. “The Autism Support Group was a part of that therapy.”

Outside of the group, Sarah keeps busy. She enjoys swimming, playing the cello in a community orchestra, and volunteering at a local theater group. Sarah has also served on the California State Council for Developmental Disabilities for six years and is part of the Department’s Lived Experience Advisory Group (LEAG — www.dds.ca.gov/leag).

Join us this in celebrating voices like Sarah’s and the communities they help build.

At the Department, we know none of our work can be done alone. We work together with you — individuals, families, regional centers, service providers, and community partners — toward a shared vision: improving outcomes for Californians with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

In this spirit of collaboration, we are launching "Together, a Team."

Each edition we will introduce a Department employee and learn about what they do, what inspires them, and how their work supports the community.

First up: Bilingual Analyst Jasmine Suo, who is helping expand access and connection across California’s Spanish-speaking communities.

Everyone belongs.

Meet Dwayne, Jackie, Barbara, and Kecia — who are using their voices to build stronger communities. Through advocacy groups, regional center boards, their jobs, and statewide communities, they connect people to opportunities to learn about services, supports, and building rich, full lives.

Leadership starts with connection — and these advocates are making sure people with intellectual and developmental disabilities are heard where decisions are made, like in the Individual Program Plan (IPP).

When people make choices and have their goals heard in the IPP planning process, they connect, learn from one another, and grow stronger communities.

This AmeriCorps Week, we're celebrating the volunteers who make a difference through service and friendship to Californians with intellectual and developmental disabilities as part of our Foster Grandparent and Senior Companion programs.

Meet Virigina, a volunteer serving through San Gabriel/Pomona Regional Center. She shared with us why volunteering is so meaningful to her. For her, it's not just about service—it's about connection. Spending time with people reminds her that sometimes the most important thing you can offer is simply being a friend.

If you're 55 or older and interested in becoming a mentor, role model, or companion to children or older adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities, you can learn more about how to get involved through our programs supported by AmeriCorps.

This March, we recognize Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month by celebrating inclusion, access, and community. Everyone deserves to be welcomed, valued, and seen—and to have what they need to participate fully in everyday life.

People with developmental disabilities are neighbors, coworkers, friends, and community members. When barriers are removed and opportunities are accessible, everyone benefits.

Join California’s Department of Developmental Services and regional centers in honoring the experiences, contributions, and rights of people with developmental disabilities—this month and every month.

In January, Inland Regional Center (IRC) hosted the “For the Culture” event in Moreno Valley, bringing families together for learning, connection, and support.

The event focused on strengthening relationships with African American, Black, and Afro-Latino families and sharing information on programs like Early Start, Blue Envelope Initiative, and Individualized Education Program (IEP) preparedness.

“This event was special because it brought our diverse community together in a space of culture, connection, and trust,” said Travis Gaddishaw-Grant, Senior Training Specialist at Inland Regional Center.

Regional center events like these highlight the importance of strong partnerships and intentional outreach in expanding access to services across California.
