Congratulations to University of California for requiring additional vaccines for school entry, but the HPV vaccine is still only recommended but not required. If you are a young adult and not already vaccinated for HPV - consider that HPV has overtaken to***co use as the leading cause of oral, head and neck cancers in men, and while cervical cancer deaths overall have decreased, the monitoring of precancerous changes greatly impacts a young woman's life, and costs the system $6 billion dollars each year.

Amid growing debate over the importance and safety of immunizations, the University of California announced a new policy requiring incoming students to get vaccinated for measles and chicken pox.

Caught this post too late for the mass screening yesterday, World Cancer Day, but there are other screenings (see link). An unlikely band of gyn oncologists from around the country have come together as the band "No Evidence of Disease" to raise awareness of "below the belt" cancers in women - while not as common as other cancers they are "especially lethal". Raising awareness is critical...and that's just what NED is doing.

An intimate, humorous, and inspiring documentary from award-winning Spark Media.

Recalling the Capitol hallways filled with anti-vaccine parents a couple of years ago when then Assemblymember Richard Pan introduced a bill to require a parent/physician discussion prior to a parent exercising the personal exemption waiver from vaccinations, these new bills will be sure to provoke discussion and bring out the crowds. Stay tuned!

Alarmed by the spread of disease as some parents decline to vaccinate their children, two state lawmakers plan legislation aimed at increasing the number of youngsters who have been immunized when they start school in California.

What happens in California can cause change throughout the country. For efficiency, furniture manufacturers use the strictest California standards for products sold everywhere, so when California requirements change, the manufacturers will adapt. 2014 brought new California regulations allowing furniture manufacturers to opt out of using chemical flame retardants, and SB 1019 (Leno) required labeling so consumers could make a choice for less toxic options. Next time you or your company buy furniture, look at the science and consider the options.

Sixteen companies and government agencies have elected to bypass furniture that contains chemical flame retardants.

This is Folic Acid Awareness week. Sufficient amounts of folic acid (0.4 mg/day) BEFORE conception drastically reduces (by 80%!) the risk of significant neural tube defects such as spina bifida and anencephaly. 50% of pregnancies are unplanned, and by the time a the pregnancy is determined, unfortunately it's likely too late, so the need to supplement is any time during a woman's reproductive years. Research has shown that a daily intake of 0.4mg (400 mg) of folic acid prior to conception can reduce the risk of having an infant born with a neural tube defect (NTD) such as spina bifida or anencephaly by approximately 80%.1 Both the United States Public Health Service and the Centers for Disease…
