PHC is building California’s physician workforce where it’s needed most!

This year’s GME investments are making a real impact across the state:
-129 new positions supporting physician pipelines in underserved communities
-74 expanding programs growing capacity to meet rising patient demand
-71 existing programs sustaining critical training infrastructure
-274 total positions strengthening access to care across California

This is what momentum looks like: investing in both new and existing programs to ensure communities have the care they deserve. 🩺

This , we celebrate the physicians and trainees helping California’s communities thrive! Through and CalMedForce+, PHC awarded 274 GME programs in the 2025 application cycle, expanding training opportunities for physicians who will serve communities across California. Programs requested far more support than available funding allowed, leaving $380 million in additional requests and highlighting the growing need to continue to invest in the physician workforce.

The Loan Repayment Program provides grant awards to eligible physicians and dentists interested in supporting the expansion of care to Medi-Cal beneficiaries. Award funds assist in reducing educational debt burden but also provide broader impacts to awardees and their communities. During 2025, Loan Repayment awardees reported providing over 1.4 million Medi-Cal patient encounters throughout the state of California. In total, 67% of their collective patient caseload provided medical and dental care for Medi-Cal beneficiaries supporting increased access to care.
