Throwing old meds in the trash or flushing them down the toilet might seem harmless - but it can actually be dangerous. Improper disposal puts kids, pets, and even the environment at risk. Instead, the safest way to get rid of unused prescription meds is through a local take-back program. Many pharmacies and law enforcement agencies offer drop-off options that are free, anonymous, and secure.

If a take-back location isn’t available, you can mix medications with something unappealing - like coffee grounds or cat litter - seal them in a bag, and throw them away. Just don’t forget to scratch out your personal info on the label before tossing the bottle.
