❤️ Heart Month Spotlight | Baby Bernardo
When Maria was five months pregnant, she learned her baby boy had a critical heart condition — hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS). Amid fear and uncertainty, she chose faith, hope, and care at Sutter Medical Center’s Children’s Center. that moment forward, teams across Sutter Medical Center’s Children’s Center began planning with Maria and her family — from fetal specialists to NICU, cardiac, surgical, and support teams — to prepare for the care Bernardo would need the second he was born. Every step was built around one goal: putting this Family First.
The moment Bernardo arrived, an entire hospital moved into action.
Neonatology, NICU, and Cardiac teams stabilized him and transferred him to the Cardiac Cath Lab, where he received an emergent, lifesaving procedure to help his heart and lungs work together.
Just five days later, Bernardo underwent his first major heart surgery — supported by pediatric cardiac surgery, NICU, PICU, respiratory therapy, pharmacy, nursing, child life, social work, chaplaincy, interpreting services, and many more teams working as ONE.
Today, Bernardo is home. Growing. Thriving. Surrounded by love.
Maria shared:
“I felt grateful to God for the doctors’ careful hands.”
At Sutter Health, patient care never stops. We are honored to walk alongside families in their hardest moments — delivering coordinated, compassionate care while putting patients and people first, always.
