A message from our Director:
As we look ahead to the end of 2024 we want to share that Midtown Nurse Midwives will be transitioning to a new phase of our journey. Over the past five incredible years, our birth center had the privilege of caring for over 600 families, offering a level of care that resulted in a 0% maternal and neonatal mortality rates.
Our model of care is special, and it’s something we’re incredibly proud of. With low client-to-provider ratios, strict risk criteria, evidence-based care, and comprehensive educational program for families, we’ve created an environment where every family is supported and empowered. Even in cases where risks arose our families received the care they needed, resulting in positive outcomes every time.
This model, though deeply rewarding, is extremely challenging in a healthcare system that doesn’t recognize or reimburse for this type of time-intensive care. Despite these challenges, we’ve continued to fight for the insurance coverage our families need and deserve. Due to federal and state barriers beyond my control, I have no choice but to close the birth center. But this isn’t the end, our practice was here for many years before the birth center and will be here for many years after.
I can shift my focus from boots-on-the-ground day-to-day care to fighting for major health policy change. If I succeed, many birth centers will open up to take our place and be sustainable in years to come. I’ve been proud to advocate for midwifery, including helping to secure independent practice rights for CNMs in California in 2020. I’m now turning my energy toward reforming birth center licensing and payer policies so that this care can become accessible to all, not just those who can afford it. MiLC is not going away, in fact it will be stronger since it will not have to share my attention with the birth center.
As we prepare to close the birth center doors in the coming months we want to invite you to visit the building one last time. Come take a photo, share your stories, and celebrate the beautiful memories we’ve created together. Our clinic will be moving soon and we look forward to continuing to serve you there with full-scope breastfeeding medicine, annual exams, birth control, postpartum mental health care, and more.
