We have some great news to share! 😁🌟Today in Los Angeles, California Health Advocates Executive Director and SMP Statewide Director, Catherina Isidro and SMP partner, Sheila Clark, President & CEO of the California Hospice and Palliative Care Association (CHAPCA) met with Dr. Mehmet Oz, Administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).

Together, they elevated urgent concerns about Medicare hospice fraud, sharing real-world testimonials and examples of fraudulent home health and hospice elections that harm patients, families, and the integrity of Medicare.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to bring California’s voice—and beneficiaries’ lived experiences—directly to CMS leadership. This is an important step toward stronger oversight, accountability, and protections for older adults and people with disabilities.

Breaking NEWS! Just now, 17 House Republicans joined with all House Democrats to pass a clean, three-year extension of the enhanced premium tax credits!! This is great news!! The bill now goes to the Senate, where Leader Thune has been non-committal about when, or if, he will bring the bill up for a vote.

Now it's our job to put pressure on Senators to bring a clean extension of the enhanced tax credits up for a vote ASAP. To do so, contact your Senators:

We’re honored to welcome William Benson to the 2026 CHA & SMP Conferences!

William Benson was instrumental in the creation of HICAP, California’s Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program—the first program of its kind in the nation to provide free, unbiased Medicare counseling. HICAP’s success became the model for today’s State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP), now operating in every state.

At the conference, William will share the history, vision, and enduring importance of HICAP/SHIP, and why these trusted programs remain a lifeline for older adults—especially in today’s challenging political and policy climate.

H.R. 1 — legislation signed into law on July 1, 2025 — delayed key federal rules meant to make it easier for people to enroll in Medicare Savings Programs. But states are not powerless.

⚠️ Important Medi-Cal Update for 2026 ⚠️

As of January 1, 2026, California is reinstating a $130,000 asset limit for many Medi-Cal programs—after being the first state to eliminate asset tests just three years ago.

What this means:
✔️ Current Medi-Cal enrollees will need to verify assets at their first renewal in 2026
✔️ New applicants after January 1, 2026 must report assets
✔️ Certain assets count, including cash, bank accounts, second vehicles, and second homes
✔️ Some people may be able to spend down assets to stay eligible

Learn what counts, who’s affected, and what steps you can take in Justice in Aging’s helpful FAQ 👉 https://justiceinaging.org/reinstatement-of-medi-cal-asset-limit-faq
