Sage River Psychotherapy

Sage River Psychotherapy Life changes when we begin to see suffering for what it is and turn toward it with kindness. Life is difficult, and to suffer is to be human.

We provide trauma informed Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) courses in-person in Midtown Sacramento and Online throughout California Neuroscience points to the idea that human beings are a collection of flexible habits--habits that are deeply impacted by our environment, our relationships, and our experiences. Our mission is to teach people to meet their own distress with compassion rather than criticism. With practice, we build a compassion habit that can fundamentally change our lives.

Your first therapy session doesn’t have to be perfect. You don’t need a script. You don’t need to know where to start. You just need a place to land—and someone to meet you there.

At Sage River, first sessions are gentle. We get curious about your story—not just the facts, but how it’s felt to live inside your life.

We slow down. We notice.
Even silence is welcome.
And together, we begin to ask:
What does your nervous system need to feel safe? What might it be like to speak your truth without rushing or bracing?

You don’t have to do it all at once. Just come as you are. 🤍

Save this for when you’re thinking of reaching out, but unsure where to begin.

Affirm these if you’re finding your way back to yourself.

There is no rush. No perfection. Just a steady invitation to remember:
You were never broken—only protecting something tender. 💙

Save this for the days you need a soft place to land. 🫂

There was a time when being vigilant kept you safe.

When working harder made you feel worthy.

When silence protected you from more pain.

But your nervous system doesn’t always know when it’s safe to soften.

In therapy, we honor the brilliance of those strategies—and help you practice something gentler.

At Sage River, we don’t pathologize these patterns:
We honor them.
They were wise.
Necessary.
Adaptive.

But we also know this:
Your nervous system may still be bracing for a danger that’s no longer here.
And you don’t have to unlearn it all at once.

In therapy, we move gently—toward what it might feel like to soften, to stay, to be held. 🤍

Save this if you’re learning to live beyond survival. 💙

It’s okay to be tired. Not just physically, but soul-deep tired. The kind of tired that comes from carrying too much for too long. From holding it all together when no one else could see how hard it was.

At Sage River, we want you to know:
Tired doesn’t mean broken. It means you’ve been trying—with everything you have. You don’t have to keep pushing through alone. 💚

There’s room here to pause.
To soften.
To be met in the tenderness of your exhaustion.

Save this for the days when rest feels like rebellion. 🤍🌿

At Sage River, we believe somatic awareness is a kind of remembering. A way to listen—without judgment—to what your nervous system has carried, often in silence.

You don’t have to force insight.

Just begin by noticing: What does your body know today?

Save this for the moments you feel something you can’t quite explain. 🤍

You are not too much.
You are not too little.
You are exactly enough.

Still, many of us spend years contorting ourselves—more productive, more agreeable, more “normal”—trying to earn the acceptance we should’ve been met with from the start.

But wholeness isn’t something you achieve by performing. It’s something you remember, slowly, with care. It was never gone—just waiting for the right conditions to re-emerge.

At Sage River, we help you come home to the truth of who you are.
You don’t have to do it alone.
Therapy can help. 💚

If you’ve been curious about couples therapy but unsure if it’s for you— you’re not alone.

There are a lot of misconceptions about Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). That it’s just talking about feelings. That you both need to be “all in” from day one. That someone will be blamed.

But EFT isn’t about blame.
It’s not about choosing sides or forcing closeness.
It’s about making space for what’s been unspoken— and learning to face it together, not against each other.

You don’t have to be perfect.
You don’t have to be ready in some idealized way.
You just need a little willingness to pause, notice, and begin.

Here at Sage River, we want you to know this:

You are not too much.
Not for needing care.
Not for feeling deeply.
Not for carrying more than anyone sees.

You don’t have to shrink to be held.
You don’t have to earn tenderness by being easy to love.

Your needs are valid.
Your emotions make sense.
And you are worthy of support—not someday, not after you "get it together"—but right now.

Save this for the days when self-doubt gets loud. 💚🌿

EFT (Emotionally Focused Therapy) isn’t about fixing your relationship—it’s about understanding it.

Not just the surface arguments. Not just communication techniques. But the deeper emotions that drive your patterns—the fear, the longing, the places that shut down when connection feels risky.

EFT slows things down. So you can notice what’s happening in your body. So you can hear what’s really being said beneath the frustration. So you can begin to feel safe enough to be seen—and safe enough to see each other.

It’s not about performing a better version of closeness. It’s about gently repairing the bond that got frayed. And learning, together, that you don’t have to do it alone anymore.

Save this if you’ve been craving a new way to feel close again. 🫂💙

You don’t have to have all the answers. But asking the right questions can open a quiet doorway to deeper knowing.

Sometimes the nervous system doesn’t need fixing—it needs listening.

Here are a few questions to gently check in with yourself today:

— What do I need right now?
— What feels like too much?
— Where does safety live in my body?

No pressure to respond with words.

Even noticing the felt sense of your answer is enough.

Come back to these when you feel disconnected, overwhelmed, or unsure.
Your body remembers the way home. 💚🌿
