Hello, Friends of Natural Health Care! Allow me to introduce myself. I’m Dr. Krystosik, also known as “Dr. Good Carbs.

I’m northeast Ohio’s leading expert in functional medicine since 1986, the host of The Other Side of Medicine podcast, author of 7 books on nutrition and natural medicine, including my best seller, Carbs from Heaven, Carbs from Hell.

” My friends call me “Dr.J”, and I invite you to do the same. I’ll explain my nicknames in just a minute.

Many of you have listened to my radio program, The Other Side of Medicine over the past 25 years. Some of you might have recently heard me and the nationally and internationally known health expert guests I interview on my podcast. I recently launched The Other Side of Medicine podcast to continue to provide information your doctor won’t tell you about. Not because your doctor is trying to hide something from you, most doctors just haven’t learned about natural medicine in medical school However, you landed here WELCOME!

My love for nutrition and natural medicine, led me to obtain a bachelor’s degree in science of nutrition. I’m also a board-certified chiropractic physician, and I have a bachelor’s degree in science of nutrition. During one of my many television appearances, Fred Griffith, the host and TV legend of the ABC television program “Morning Exchange” dubbed me “Dr. Good Carbs.” Since that time, the name “Dr. Good Carbs” has stayed with me. So, what about “DrJ?” Well, here’s the scoop. I love basketball, and for those of you who didn’t know, there is a very famous NBA basketball legend named “DrJ.” So, since my name is James, and I love the game, I adopted the name DrJ. Now, I’ll be 74 years young in July of 2023, and I still play full court basketball with college students at Kent State University. Actualy I can beat 90% of them in a one-on-one- full speed ahead game, which takes about 20 to 30 minutes. Just saying age is only a number! My wife and I love to swim, bicycle and run, in fact we perform in triathlon races. I have 7 children, and 5 beautiful grandchildren.

During the Covid epidemic, after 25 plus years, and helping lover 15,000 patients recover from chronic diseases without drugs or surgery, I regrettably closed land office, The Other Side of Medicine Health Center. I needed to find a better way to deliver my services. I still had a passion to help the many “walking wounded” people suffering with chronic diseases, needlessly.

In the process, like so many other physicians during the Covid epidemic, I shifted to telemedicine, online healthcare. Now I am able to help people worldwide, reclaim their health, by unlocking their body’s ability to heal itself without drugs or surgery. As a physician, I have always taken the Hippocratic oath seriously, “Above All Do No Harm.” That is precisely why I prescribe food as medicine, along with herbs, exercise, stress management, and other lifestyle modifications.

I encourage my patients to take an active role in their healthcare. To help them on their journey back to good health, we form an equal partnership, cooperating with the healing power God has programmed into each one of our bodies.

One of my primary objectives I strive for with my patient’s is to restore the integrity of their digestive system, “the gut”. Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, said “All Disease Begins in the Gut.” Researchers, and doctors worldwide are currently proving most chronic disease, originates from an imbalance in the function of the digestive system.

That is why I created, my online coarse and 12 week coaching program, The Gut 9.1.1. God Rx. This 90 day online coarse and coaching program is designed to get to the root cause of most chronic disease. It is the same protocol I used to help over 15,000 patients in my health center for over 25 years. Many of these people were told they had to be on medications for the rest of their lives, or they had to have body parts surgically removed. Yet, they are off the medications, and body parts like intestines, gall bladders, spleens, breasts, prostates, uteruses, are still intact, right where the good Lord intended them to be. Now it’s your turn to do the same, and I would be honored to help you reach your health goals.
But enough about me…

Dementia is primarily a lifestyle disease, with genetics playing only a small part. While inherited factors may contribute, it's lifestyle choices—such as diet, physical activity, and mental engagement—that hold the most influence over brain health.

Epigenetics, the study of how these lifestyle factors can modify gene expression, emphasizes that we have significant control over our cognitive destiny. Prioritizing a healthy lifestyle can greatly reduce the risk of developing dementia.

Obesity is not a deficiency of pharmaceutical drugs like Ozempic but rather a deficiency of key nutrients—fiber being a major one. As highlighted in Dr. Krystosik’s teachings, fiber serves as the fuel for beneficial gut bacteria, which are critical for producing GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1). This hormone contributes to satiety, aids in blood sugar regulation, and promotes insulin sensitivity—all naturally, without the side effects associated with drugs like Ozempic.

Here’s why fiber is so essential:

Gut Microbiome and GLP-1: When fiber-rich foods (like vegetables, fruits, and whole grains) are fermented in the colon, they feed beneficial gut bacteria. These bacteria then produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which stimulate the production of GLP-1. This hormone helps regulate appetite and blood sugar levels.

Natural Blood Sugar Control: Fiber slows the absorption of sugars into the bloodstream, preventing the spikes and crashes that lead to insulin resistance over time.

No Side Effects: Unlike drugs, fiber enhances overall digestive health, reduces inflammation, and protects against a host of chronic diseases without adverse effects.

The "Standard American Diet" is loaded with processed, fiber-deficient foods ("carbs from hell"). Shifting to "carbs from heaven" (natural, unprocessed sources) restores the balance needed for optimal gut health and weight regulation.

For those looking to regain control of their weight naturally, increasing fiber intake is a simple, sustainable, and evidence-based approach.

Fermented foods like yogurt, sauerkraut, kimchi, and kefir provide significant benefits for gut health. They are rich in probiotics, beneficial bacteria that support a balanced gut microbiome, essential for digestion and nutrient absorption. Probiotics help maintain intestinal integrity, preventing conditions like leaky gut syndrome. They combat harmful bacteria, reducing the risk of infections and inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract.

Regular consumption of fermented foods has been linked to improved symptoms of digestive disorders like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Additionally, these foods contribute to enhanced immunity, as the gut houses a large portion of the immune system. Fermentation also boosts the bioavailability of nutrients, making it easier for the body to absorb vitamins and minerals.

Incorporating fermented foods into your diet can decrease systemic inflammation, support weight management, and even improve mood by influencing the gut-brain axis.

The human gut is a bustling ecosystem teeming with trillions of microorganisms—ten times more than the total number of cells in the human body. These bacteria, collectively known as the gut microbiota, are vital for digestion, nutrient absorption, immune function, and overall health. When the gut is in balance, approximately 80% of these bacteria are beneficial, helping to produce essential vitamins, break down food, and protect against harmful invaders. The remaining 20% consists of potentially harmful bacteria that are usually kept in check by the beneficial ones.

However, when this balance is disrupted, and harmful bacteria begin to outnumber the beneficial ones, it leads to a condition called dysbiosis. Dysbiosis can be caused by factors such as poor diet, stress, antibiotic overuse, or environmental toxins. Symptoms may include bloating, gas, diarrhea, constipation, and a weakened immune system. Over time, dysbiosis can contribute to more serious conditions, such as inflammatory bowel disease, autoimmune disorders, or metabolic issues.

Maintaining a healthy gut requires nourishing it with a fiber-rich diet, fermented foods, and probiotics while minimizing processed foods and sugars. By fostering the right balance of bacteria, we can support a resilient gut, which is essential for a vibrant and healthy life.

Beneficial bacteria in the gut, such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, help restore and maintain the integrity of the gut lining, preventing leaky gut and reducing inflammation.

These bacteria also support the immune system by enhancing the production of immune cells and regulating inflammatory responses, which promotes overall health and disease resistance.

One specific bacteria Akkermansia muciniphila found in the gut plays a key role in maintaining gut health. It helps repair and maintain the gut lining by breaking down mucin, a component of mucus that protects the gut. This process strengthens the intestinal barrier, reducing inflammation and promoting a healthy gut microbiome.

Research demonstrates Akkermansia muciniphila is also linked to weight loss and improved metabolic health, as it may help regulate fat storage and improve insulin sensitivity. By fostering a healthy balance of Akkermansia, gut health and weight management may be supported.
