In November 2023, Saginaw native Selestina sustained a T-9 spinal cord injury that changed her life.
After her accident, Selestina spent over a month in Mary Free Bed at Covenants inpatient rehabilitation program, beginning a journey built on determination and small, meaningful goals. “Everything I’ve accomplished has always started with one goal at a time.” she shared. ⭐
Highly self-driven, Selestina often came into therapy with specific things she wanted to work on. In outpatient therapy, she focused on balance and walking, with support from our orthotics & prosthetics team, who provided her leg orthotic braces. 💪
One of her proudest milestones has been regaining independence. “Being able to get into my braces by myself and walk from my room to the living room gave me independence I didn’t think I was going to have again.” 🧡
Through years of hard work, multiple therapy sessions each week, and the constant encouragement of her care team, Selestina continued to move forward. “They don’t let you give up,” she said. “Every week I had a new goal and I did it because of them.”
Today, Selestina is doing what once felt unthinkable, rehabilitating her body one day at a time. ✨
