NMC is recognizing Mental Health Awareness Month. Here are some thoughts to keep in mind during this month from our Cheif People Officer, Lorriane Jenne.

This month is a time to pause, check in with ourselves and each other, and remember that mental health is just as important as physical health. It is also an opportunity to recognize the significance that mental well‑being plays in our workplace and beyond. Mental health challenges can affect anyone, and creating a culture of understanding, respect, and support can make all the difference in a co-worker’s experience.

Stigma is often a deterrent in seeking help. Let’s work together to reduce stigma, encourage open conversations, and remind one another that help and hope are available. Everyone’s journey is different, and seeking support is a sign of strength—not weakness.

This month, especially, we encourage everyone to prioritize self‑care, check in on colleagues, and use available support resources when needed. A simple act of listening or kindness can create an essential connection for someone. When we take care of our mental health, we strengthen not only ourselves, but our teams and our community.

We are aware of reports spreading in the community and wanted to share that there was an isolated incident in NMC’s Emergency Department this afternoon. There were no injuries as a result of the incident and an arrest was made. Both the St. Albans City Police Department and the Vermont State Police responded to NMC for the incident and an investigation is ongoing. Further information will come from law enforcement. The Emergency Department has returned to normal operations.

This morning, Daniel Vincent, an RN on PCU, was honored with The DAISY Award® For Extraordinary Nurses. The award is part of the DAISY Foundation's programs to recognize the super-human efforts nurses perform every day. An excerpt from the nomination said:

"I came to the PCU with a high level of pain and anxiety about the symptoms I was experiencing. I had a recent kidney stent placed in about a week ago. I started having intense pain and nausea and was unable to keep anything down. After speaking with urology staff, they said I needed to go to the ER The ER staff did great and trying to keep up with all of my symptoms. However, my first night with Daniel as my nurse, he took care of me more than just physical. He listened to me. He listened to my fear. Listen to my guilt of being away from my family for the second time being hospitalized in two weeks. Daniel took the time to really talk things through with me and help me focus on healing on the things that I can control. Despite his busy schedule as an RN has on the floor he wanted to make sure I knew he was there for me. Daniel also showed his advocacy skills for me and asked what worked really well for me last time and what didn’t and discussed this with the Provider being assigned to me. His 360 approach to skills, communication and compassion made me feel safe and heard. Daniel is an exemplary example of an RN patient working together as a team and needs to be recognized for his technical as well as emotional care of his patients.”

Thank you Daniel for providing such exceptional care! We appreciate you.💙
