This last weekend, I found myself by myself for the first time in a while. My wife and three of our children are finishing up the school year in Utah and will be here in just a few weeks. My youngest son, Grant, is with me, but he spent the weekend camping with my nephew, Garrett. My parents are also out of town in Texas helping my sister.
So where did I end up spending part of my weekend? The cemetery. Odd for me, right?
I decided to give a little extra attention and love to my family’s headstones. I edged around each one, cleaned them up, and spent some quiet time there. I still need to get some monument cleaner to help remove the staining, but it already made a big difference.
Our cemetery crews truly do the best they can, and I appreciate the work they do. But when you stop and take the time to focus on one stone at a time, you realize how much detail and effort goes into keeping them looking nice. It took me about 10–15 minutes per headstone just to edge around and clean each one up.
There’s something meaningful about caring for the resting places of those who came before us. It may seem like a small act, but to families, those small acts matter.
As we head into Memorial Weekend, I hope we all take time to reflect on those who have gone on before us, and especially those who gave their lives fighting for this great nation.
Just as a reminder, I am also a headstone and monument wholesaler working with local monument dealers in Idaho Falls, and I’m happy to help families with their monument needs. I’ll soon have samples available here at the funeral home so families can see larger-scale granite color options in person.
