Avoiding the Comparison Trap: Insights from a Palm Beach Luxury Road Trip

Recently, my husband and I took a trip down to Boca Raton and Palm Beach. As we drove along the coast, admiring the beautifully landscaped, immaculate mansions, we couldn't help but wonder what it would be like to possess such immense wealth. How different would our lives be?

We imagined our daily routines in that lifestyle and came to a surprising realization. No matter how much money we might have, how grand our house might be, or how fashionable our attire, it might never feel like enough.

If you took one of those Palm Beach mega-mansions and placed it in a modest Florida town, it would stand out as the largest and most opulent house. But in Palm Beach, that same mansion blends in, almost unnoticed, because such luxury is the norm. This stark contrast made us ponder how wealth and success are relative.

What one person sees as riches, another might view as mediocre. It led us to some deeper questions for each other like…

How do you practice contentment?

How do you avoid the comparison trap and stay satisfied with what you have?

We came up with things like…

Staying humble and grateful.

Focus on being thankful for what you do have rather than what you don’t have.

Set personal goals and measure your success by your own progress rather than comparing it to others.

My husband said, “At the end of the day, to be human, you don’t need very much. Food, shelter, safety, and security is a must. Beyond that, everything else is a want. It’s okay to have wants, but don’t let those wants cloud your life.”

There’s a price to pay for everything. Whether it’s time or energy in order to obtain that level of wealth and more so, the responsibility to maintain it.

To avoid the comparison trap, remind yourself that everyone’s journey is different, and what you see on the surface rarely tells the whole story.

What about you? How do you practice contentment and avoid the comparison trap?

🌿 The Inspiring Tale of Ms. Alocasia 🌿

A year ago, I adopted my daughter's plant named Ms. Alocasia. Throughout her prior years with Ms. Alocasia, my daughter encountered challenges in keeping her plant healthy. There were moments when the plant looked like she wouldn’t make it, particularly when plagued by spider mites.

During those tough periods, Ms. Alocasia would lose her leaves, a clear indication that she was struggling. My daughter tried everything to nurse her back to health - meticulously cleaning the leaves, adjusting the watering schedule, and ensuring the plant received the right amount of light. Yet, time and again, just when it seemed like all hope was lost, Ms. Alocasia surprised my daughter by bouncing back. Tiny green leaves would start to emerge from the soil, signaling a new beginning.

When my daughter moved to the west coast, she faced a tough decision. She couldn’t transport Ms. Alocasia across the country and had to find a new caretaker for her beloved plant and so she entrusted Ms. Alocasia to me.

In my care, the plant continued to be a symbol of hope and perseverance. However, there were moments when I thought she wouldn’t make it. I remember one particularly tough period when she was down to just one lifeless leaf. Despite my best efforts, she seemed to be on the brink of death. Yet, I couldn’t bring myself to give up on her. One day, I placed another plant next to Ms. Alocasia, thinking she might benefit from companionship. Perhaps it’s the carbon monoxide from the other plant that revived Ms. Alocasia, but whatever the reason, the results were astonishing. Almost immediately, her leaves became more vibrant and new growth appeared more frequently.

Just like Ms. Alocasia, we have an incredible capacity to bounce back, to find strength even in the most challenging circumstances. We must never give up hope, because we never know when that tiny green leaf of possibility will emerge, signaling that all is not lost.

I was also reminded of the importance of companionship. Just as Ms. Alocasia thrived with another plant by her side, we too need the presence of others to truly flourish.

Hold on to hope, surround yourself with supportive companions, and believe in your ability to overcome. You never know when a tiny green leaf of possibility will sprout in your life 🌱✨

How Do You Perceive Stress In Your Life?

When life throws a lot of curve balls at you, do you feel like you're barely keeping up to catch them all?

To find out how you’re doing when it comes to your perceived level of stress, you can take the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) Assessment.

The PSS assessment was originally developed in the 80’s by Cohen, S., & Williamson, G. This assessment gives you insight to understanding how different situations affect your feelings and your perceived stress. When taking the test, the best approach is to answer fairly quickly.

For each question you’ll choose from the following alternatives:
0 - never
1 - almost never
2 - sometimes
3 - fairly often
4 - very often

So let’s begin…

In the last month…
1) How often have you been upset because of something that happened unexpectedly?

2) How often have you felt that you were unable to control the important things in your life?

3) How often have you felt nervous and stressed?

4) How often have you felt confident about your ability to handle your personal problems?

5) How often have you felt that things were going your way?

6) How often have you found that you could not cope with all the things that you had to do?

7) How often have you been able to control irritations in your life?

8) How often have you felt that you were on top of things?

9) How often have you been angered because of things that happened that were outside of your control?

10) How often have you felt difficulties were piling up so high that you could not overcome them?

You can determine your PSS score by following these directions:
• First, reverse your scores for questions 4, 5, 7, and 8. On these 4 questions, change the scores like: 0 = 4, 1 = 3, 2 = 2, 3 = 1, 4 = 0
• Now add up your scores for each item to get a total.

► 0-13 = low stress.
► 14-26 = moderate stress.
► 27-40 = high perceived stress.

Your perception of what is happening in your life is more important than the stress itself. Consider the idea that two individuals could have the exact same events and experiences in their lives for the past month, yet depending on their perception, changes how they cope and deal with the same events.

So, how did you score?

Quick Hack to Retrain Your Stomach

Most of us rely on our eyes to decide when to stop eating. How many times have you continued eating just because there was more food on your plate?

This habit is one of the biggest mistakes when it comes to eating. After our toddler years, caregivers, parents, and teachers often teach us to rely on our eyes rather than our stomachs.

Does this sound familiar?
• “You can’t leave the table until you finish your food.”
• “No dessert until you finish all your vegetables.”
• “There are starving people who would be grateful for your food, so don’t waste it.”
• “If you finish everything on your plate, you’ll show grandma how much you love her cooking.”

As children, we trust what adults teach us and because they want to please those in authority, they will try their best to follow through on what they are being told… even when their tummies are saying, “Please stop! We’re full and can’t eat anymore.”

So how do you reverse this unfortunate and misguided training?

One effective way to retrain your stomach to take back control is by eating blindfolded. This forces you to rely on signals from your stomach rather than your eyes. Eventually, your stomach, not your eyes, will decide when you've had enough.

I know this may sound like a ridiculous or impractical suggestion, but if you are willing to try it, it will "open your eyes" (no pun intended) to how often you rely on your eyes as your authority.

If you’re willing to try this hack, let me know how it went in the comments.

Happy Blindfolding!

Breaking Unwanted Eating Habits: 5 Tips for Success

Our brains are wired to seek out patterns. When we repeatedly engage in a behavior, our brains recognize and reinforce it through a process called “reinforcement learning.” This involves the release of dopamine, a neurotransmitter associated with pleasure and reward, making the habit more automatic and difficult to resist.

Our brains reinforce harmful behaviors because it's a survival mechanism. Automating routine behaviors conserves mental energy. The brain reinforces patterns it thinks keep us happy and well, even if they're harmful. It's up to our prefrontal cortex to guide our neurotransmitters on which habits to reinforce or weaken.

Breaking a habit involves rewiring the neural pathways associated with it, requiring consistent effort and time. During this time, the brain undergoes neuroplasticity, forming new neural connections. By consistently avoiding the behavior and replacing it with healthier alternatives, you can weaken the reinforcement of neurotransmitters associated with that habit.

Here are 5 tips to get rid of unwanted habits:

1. Consistency and Repetition:
Strengthen neural connections by consistently practicing new behaviors. This reinforces the connections and makes them more automatic over time.

2. Use a Mantra:
Create a simple, consistent response to counter your habit. For example, if you're trying to stop eating popcorn late at night, say, “No, no, no - we no longer eat popcorn late at night.” Repeat it whenever the urge arises.

3. Be Patient and Persistent:
Just like training a dog, remain patient and consistent. Over time, your brain will learn that the old behavior is no longer effective.

4. Track Your Progress:
Keep a tally of how often your brain signals for the habit and how often you successfully resist. This helps you see progress and stay motivated.

5. Reflect on Past Successes:
Write down habits you’ve broken in the past to remind yourself of your capability to change.

If you’d like guidance on how to change your neuroplasticity when it comes to unwanted eating habits, I can help.

💎 Diamonds are beautiful and they captivate us with their sparkle and brilliance. ✨

Diamonds hold immense value, especially the rare, large, high-quality ones. For those who know me, it’s no secret that I’m easily seduced by a gorgeous, shiny diamond. I just love them.

But did you know diamonds were formed from carbon atoms 1-3 billion years ago, 87 miles beneath the Earth's mantle under extreme heat and pressure?

The temperature in the mantle is 1,652 to 2,372°F, crystallizing carbon into diamond structures. The melting point? A staggering 6,332°F.

🌋Volcanic eruptions create kimberlite pipes, bringing diamonds to the surface. These pipes are like elevators for diamonds, carrying them from deep within the Earth. Only 1% of kimberlite pipes are economically viable, highlighting the rarity of diamonds.

⏳The last diamond-bearing eruption was 100 million years ago, making every mined diamond incredibly ancient.

Robin Hansen from the Natural History Museum, London, once said, "The oldest known terrestrial diamonds are thought to be about 3.3 billion years old. Our own species, homo sapiens, have only been around for 200,000 years – that’s a vanishingly small percentage of the lifetime of the diamond."

Diamonds truly are forever.

💎Reflecting on their difficult journey, we see how pressures, perseverance, and challenges shape their stunning outcome.

🌟 Much like in our own lives, pressure, stress, intensity, and perseverance refine and develop us into brilliance too...if you let it.

So don’t always seek the easy path. Easy won’t shape you into what you’re meant to be. Instead, welcome the arduous journey so you can shine bright with a stunning outcome too.

🌟 Hey there, amazing minds! 🌟

Our minds are full of thoughts, ideas, dreams, and all kinds of cool stuff. Yet, sometimes our minds race, sometimes they get tired, and sometimes they don't do what we want. But no matter how your brain functions, your mind is always there for you.

For years I struggled with the fact that I have a learning disability and ADHD and felt inadequate intellectually for my whole life. Yet now I embrace my unique brain power, my creativity, my vivid imagination that comes in handy with my business, and yep, even the occasional forgetfulness. It's all part of what makes me, me.

If you’re dealing with a learning disability or ADHD at work, here are some tips that might help:

Speak Up:
Don’t be shy about sharing your needs with your boss or team. For years, I kept my ADHD from my bosses because I felt shame around my learning disabilities. But keeping this information from them made my ADHD symptoms worse, especially when work pressures increased. Not having the right support from my bosses fed into performance decline. Being open can lead to getting the support you need and can really make a difference.

Break It Down:
Big tasks can be overwhelming. Chunk them down into smaller, bite-sized steps to keep your focus and momentum.

Use Tech to Your Advantage:
Use Apps for organizing, reminders, and note-taking are your best friends. They can really help keep you on track.

Don’t Procrastinate:
The more productive you are, the less stress you will experience. Less stress = less ADHD symptoms. Create a list of tasks you need to accomplish and prioritize them accordingly. Stick to your action plan as much as you can.

Create a Distraction-Free Zone:
Create a workspace that cuts down on distractions and is clean and organized. A tidy desk can make a world of difference for how well you focus on your tasks. A clean work space can also improve and boost your mood to be more ready to get things done. ✨💪

Are You Feeling the Effects of Aging? Let's Talk About It!

Hey there, friends feeling the weight of aging. I know it’s tough when physical symptoms remind you daily that you’re getting older. Stiff joints, chronic pain, and hesitation to do activities you once loved can make you feel much older than you are.

You’ve probably been trying everything to feel better like eating healthier, staying active, taking supplements, and investing in anti-aging products. But despite these efforts, you might still feel old and less capable. Why? Because while these external efforts are important, they only address part of the issue.

Focusing solely on external aspects like keeping your body fit and your skin healthy won’t fully rejuvenate you. The real game-changer is your mindset. It’s crucial to work on your internal dialogue and feelings as well as your physical body.

I recently turned 48 and felt the approach of 50, especially with chronic hip pain reminding me of aging. But then, I decided to shift my mindset. Instead of feeling “helpless” about aging, I chose to feel “empowered and excited.” On a trip to Orlando, I decided to get in touch with my inner child by going down a waterslide - something I hadn’t done in over 20 years.

Fear initially held me back, but with my husband’s encouragement, we climbed those tall stairs. The excitement and anticipation reminded me of my younger days going down waterslides all day long. As we shot down the blue waterslide, I felt a surge of joy, nervousness, and exhilaration that made me feel young and alive again.

This experience taught me an invaluable lesson: changing my mindset made me feel younger and more vibrant, despite my physical age and appearance.

If you want to feel young again, start by shifting your mindset. Reconnect with activities that once brought you joy and excitement. Remember, most of how you feel about yourself starts with your thoughts. Embrace a youthful mindset and see how it transforms your experience of aging too.

05/13/2024

Before I became a Life Coach, I used to think about food every 15 minutes or so. I felt like I was a puppet being controlled by my own brain.

For example, when I was bored or stressed, I would instantly think about food to change my mind or mood which led me to the fridge or pantry. I would even reach for food to put me at ease in uncomfortable or awkward social situations. When I needed to wind down from a long day, I would think about which foods would best help me to relax. I could go on and on about the many different ways I used to think about food. It was draining.

But now the food noise has quieted down drastically. In fact, the thoughts about food are so much less frequent that I sometimes don’t realize hours have gone by without me once thinking about food.

What finally freed me from constantly thinking about food was learning the science behind how neuroplasticity works in our brains. Like a computer program, my brain was programmed to constantly think about food. If I wanted to change the program, I had to update my brain’s software to create new neuropathways that led to food sanity.

I know I’m not the only one that has struggled with this. If you’re still reading this, you might be able to relate to how exhausting and discouraging it is to feel like you have no control over your thoughts surrounding food.

This is why it’s my passion to help free people from the “food obsession prison”. If you notice that you think about food when you’re not hungry, then you might be controlled by your brain more than you want to admit.

I’ve studied this struggle, I’ve lived it for years, and I have effective tools that can help. If you’re ready to quiet the food noise, let’s talk!

At this point everyone has heard the narrative that success is all about the constant hustle and relentless drive towards productivity.

We're led to believe that if we're not constantly on the go, we're falling behind. But let's be real for a moment... does this mindset serve us?

In a society that glorifies busyness, it's easy to feel like we have to keep up the frantic pace just to stay afloat. We're afraid that if we slow down, we'll miss out on opportunities or fall behind.

But constantly rushing through life comes at a cost. It leaves us feeling stressed, overwhelmed, and disconnected from the present moment. We miss out on the beauty and richness of life when we're constantly focused on what's next.

This is why it is so important to dedicate at least a little time every day to mindfulness. Taking some extra time to pet your dog (or in my case my parent's cat) is a valuable way to recenter yourself in the present moment.

Instead of constantly chasing after the next big thing, try taking a moment to slow down and savor the present. By dedicating practice to remaining present in the moment, we can cultivate a greater sense of calm, clarity, and fulfillment in our lives. We can find peace and satisfaction!

If you continue to live in the future, you are setting yourself up to feel burnt out, exhausted, and unfulfilled. You miss out on the joy and beauty that life has to offer when you're too busy rushing through it.

There is an important balance to strive for, weighing the effects of your actions on the future against the repercussions of neglecting the present moment.

As a life coach I work with my clients to find a balance that works for them, and I can help you discover what that looks like for you as well.
