YOU HAVE PROBABLY HEARD THE SAYING THAT GOOD THINGS COME IN PAIRS! BUT DON’T FORGET THAT BAD THINGS DO TOO. AND AT TIME MORE FREQUENTLY!

In the last three month I have had three female patients fifty years old and up, come to the office complaining of hip pain. In one it was bilaterally. They had been dealing with the discomfort for a long time and have had cortisone Injections, physical therapy, rest, application of heat etc. with no relief. None of the three have had an MRI ordered before visiting our office. We did order hip MRI’s in all three patients. In two we found labral tears and in all of them we found one or more gluteal tendon tears. This tells you how important a good detailed history and physical exam are to guide you as to what test to order. They all have had x-ray that show nothing was wrong and in one of them their insurance refused to pay for the MRI and the patient had to pay out of pocket!

So far, the first of the three patients has been treated successfully with high dose PRP using guided injections under local anesthesia in our fully equipped procedure room. Gluteal tendon tears are common in women, particularly those aged 50-70, and are often caused by chronic degeneration rather than acute injury. So, if you have hip pain don’t assume you need a hip replacement. A simple in office injection with high dose PRP may do the trick for you!

FOR THOSE INTERESTED IN EXCELLENT ORTHOPEDIC CARE

I have practiced in St. Augustine since summer of 1988, first and until 2002 as an Anesthesiologist and Interventional Pain Specialist at St. Augustine General Hospital and later at Flagler Hospital. Since 2002 I restricted my practice to office base Interventional Pain Management and Regenerative Medicine using only FDA clear procedures.

Along those years I have worked with many Orthopedic Surgeons. This past Friday when I needed one for a family member who sustained a wrist fracture, we experienced the excellent care provided by James M Grimes MD and his team. I called him and he immediately asked me to bring the patient to his office. We got there by 10:30 AM. He saw the patient immediately and determined surgery was needed. Since he does not do surgery at UF Health St. Johns Flagler Hospital anymore, I was hesitant when he mentioned going to Putnam Hospital in Palatka for the surgery. But he assured me the care there would be top notch and boy he was right!

I drove the patient to Putnam Hospital emergency room where they were waiting for the patient. The people in the ER were fantastic and very friendly. Later, I got to meet Jackie the director of the Operating Room who was very pleasant and accommodating. I also met my colleague, the anesthesiologist Jeffrey Burbidge MD and the rest of the operating room team.

To make a long story short, my family member underwent the surgery at Putnam Hospital as an outpatient without a glitch and we were back home by 4:00 PM. This is the kind of care you want for your family in an emergency and not someone telling you we can’t see you till Monday like they did at UF Health St. Johns Flagler Hospital Orthopedic Group. PLEASE ALWAYS BE AWARE OF THE QUALIFICATIONS OF THE PERSON TREATING YOU AT WHATEVER HOSPITAL, CLINIC, EMERGENCY ROOM, URGENT CARE OR WALK-IN CLINIC YOU END UP AT. AND MOST IMPORTANTLY MAKE SURE YOU MEET THE MD OR DO IN CHARGE OF YOUR CARE!

In this day and age there is a lack of transparency in medicine. It has become a business and for that reason business people are starting to replace Medical Doctors for a cheaper alternative even if the qualifications are not comparable. Not only that, some of these nurse practitioners or physician assistants (so call mid-level provider) attend “online programs where open book test are allowed” and never have any in hospital clinical rotations. Yes, nurse practitioners are vital but they are not Medical Doctors and always, always, they need to be supervised by an MD or DO on the premises. According to the American Medical Association,
“Nurses are indispensable but they cannot take the place of a fully trained physician”

Don’t let corporate greed put you or your family at risk. Please don’t be fooled by the business people running the show. Please inform yourself. I am not making this up! Don’t be a victim!
