Tonight we had the opportunity to recognize a crew that assisted with the delivery of a baby girl back in July! Thank you to SE MN Emergency Medical Services for presenting the awards.

Congratulations to Ambulance members Cage, Russell, Fruth and St. Charles Police Department Officer Nesbit!

Thank you to our ALS partners and Paramedic Thompson from Mayo Clinic Ambulance Service!

Special thanks to the family for allowing us to share this story and celebrate baby Emma!

August 12, 2025- Tonight we were able to celebrate baby Emma's Day of Birth with the St. Charles Ambulance, St. Charles Police Department, and Mayo Clinic Ambulance Service crew members who assisted in her arrival.

Stork Awards were presented, at the St. Charles City Council Meeting, for their assistance with baby Emma deviating from "the birth plan."

The Stork Award is a recognition given to Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel, including dispatchers and other first responders, who assist with the delivery of a newborn outside of a hospital setting. This award acknowledges their crucial role in potentially life-saving situations, often involving high-stress circumstances and the need for quick, informed action and decisions. A small token of gratitude for our EMS and first responder partners.

Many congratulations to the crew and family members who were in attendance to say Thank-You.

If your service has the privilege to assist in a pre-hospital delivery, feel free to submit provider award recommendations here: https://www.seems.com/stork-awards.html

MEET THE TEAM: Polly Johnson

Polly will have been with St. Charles Ambulance for two years this August and the experience has changed her life in countless ways. She said, "I have become such good friends with some of the greatest people I've ever met on this service and it has completely changed my career path." Polly feels that the experiences first responders go through becomes a way to connect us together in a way no one can understand unless you’re in it. She appreciates and holds such high respect for anyone in this field and it has changed the way she walks through life, and she said she is stronger knowing some of the greatest people have her back.

Recently, Polly began working at Mayo Clinic as a Certified Rhythm Analysis Technician, specializing in cardiac monitoring. She’s been thoroughly enjoying her new role! For the past 13 years, she and her husband Jeremy and their three children, Logan (12), Leah (12), and Liam (8) have lived in St. Charles. A fun fact about Polly is that her summers are fully devoted to life on the ball field watching her kids play, something she absolutely loves!

A few members from the St. Charles and Lewiston Ambulance had the recent opportunity to attend the All Clear Foundation’s ResponderStrong Mental Health Curriculum Training in Brainerd, MN.

Created for Responders by Responders, this highly regarded program has been implemented across the nation to bolster resiliency, erode stigma, and decrease stress injury: burnout, compassion fatigue, anxiety, depression, and suicidality.

Our members said that the training was super informative and some of their key takeaways included how mental health issues are obviously very relevant in EMS, Law Enforcement, and other Responder Agencies in both our local area and nationwide. They learned how to spot warning signs in others, but also talked about the very real instances of how some don't always show those signs and it can be hard to detect. They said they were thankful to learn about available resources, different types of interventions, and proven practices to help improve resilience and better manage stress in responders and their families.

Thank you to our dedicated members for learning this information to bring back to our services so that we can continue to take care of each other and serve the better communities around us!

MEET THE TEAM: Jerel Mockenhaupt

Jerel has been on the ambulance for about 3 years now. He wanted to get involved many years ago, but finally got the courage to get his EMT certification more recently. Jerel is retired from the Rochester Police Department, but now works part time for Winona County Sheriffs Dept as a Transport Officer while also volunteering with the SC Ambulance. When Jerel was a patrol officer, he spent 5 years in Investigations (liaison with RFD as an Arson Investigator). During his time, he also held roles as Crisis Negotiator, Honor Guard, Crisis Intervention Team, Field Training Officer, Fi****ms Instructor, and Project Lifesaver. Being a member of the Rochester Police Department gave him the opportunity to respond to a wide variety of medical calls. He carried portable defibrillators in his squad car which gave him another tool in addition to CPR for cardiac arrest calls. Jerel was actually the first officer in the State of MN to be recognized with 5 saves (successful resuscitation efforts on a call) and retired with 8. Jerel has lived in St. Charles for the last 21 years with his wife, Shelley, who he's been married to for 41 years! Wow! Shelley is a ten year leukemia survivor and is the bravest person Jerel knows. Together, Jerel & Shelley love spoiling their poodle fur babies: Gracie, Scarlette, and Josie. Jerel's favorite part of being on the Ambulance service is being able to work with great people who all have such varied experiences and being able to serve the community of St. Charles. He said, "this service has some of the most dedicated people that I've ever worked with. We work as a team every call. I also enjoy working with an amazing Ambulance Director, Matt Essig." A fun fact about Jerel: He is a volunteer transporter for the International Owl Center, Quarry Hill Nature Center, and on the capture team for the Minnesota Raptor Center.
