Five recommendations to save you from paying for broken frames

AVOID pushing the glasses to the top of your head. Stretches the frame out and overtime will cause breakage to the frame itself. We know moms and dads have eyes in the back of their heads; not the top

You’re probably not Superman; so don’t remove your glasses like Clark Kent sweeping them off of your face to one side. Over time this action stretches the frame to one side and ultimately won’t stay up or tight to wear. Breakage is common.

A protective carrying case for all prescription safety glasses Reduces the likelihood of damage or loss.

Routine maintenance is required for some frame materials and styles. Some ophthalmic frames have to be realigned, some have screws that require tightening due to repeated on and off activity. Up to 10 times a day 300 times a month 3,650 times in a year.

CLEANING your frames is a gooooood Idea. The frames last longer and you can see through the lenses much better. BUT avoid using pre-moistened lens wipes that contain alcohol. Coated prescription lenses will be damaged. The alcohol also dries out the plastic parts of the frames eventually resulting in the frame cracking/breaking

PROTECT YOUR EYEGLASSES

Hello
It has been about 8 years since our area experienced the frigid temperatures expected to hit in the next few days.
To avoid damages to eyeglass frames left in vehicles outside for long periods; bring the eyeglasses inside out of the cold. There is a risk of damage due to the sub zero temperatures.
Remember ophthalmic frames must be allowed to adjust to the warmer inside temperature over time before wearing them. there is a strong possibility the frame will crack.

Trick-or-treat
If you purchased colored contact lenses to change the color of the eye for a Halloween costume, and the lenses were not prescribed by the doctor
I would not wear them
Contact lenses a class three medical device which need to be measured and designed through an examination. You can’t just order them without a prescription The damage to the eye could be irreversible.

Recently I have encountered a number of clients who are unhappy with the fit of the eyewear they purchased elsewhere
The frames are either too small or too large.
So what you ask?
In both scenarios the frame will tend to slide down and you’re constantly pushing the frame back up along your nose. The frames never feel secure or comfortable. The weight of the frame will be more of a force on the nose.
Here are two examples of what may occur if the frame doesn’t fit properly
What you want to look for is an alignment of the frame corner with the line of your cheek. If the frame corner is out side that line- the frame is too large. If the frame is inside that line- the frame is too small.
Frame selection is the key to making your prescription glasses work effectively for you.

Recently a person wearing prescription safety glasses had a chemical substance splash on his eyewear. A solvent was used to remove the foreign substance but as you can see; destroyed the frame. You can use acetone free nail polish remover but anything else will result in damage to the lenses and frame.

And keep in mind; the packaged lens wipes depending on their alcohol content can also damage ophthalmic frames and lenses
For instance, ZEISS Lens Cleaning Wipes are advertised as having 70% alcohol.

Potential for Damage: High concentrations of alcohol, especially undiluted rubbing alcohol, can potentially damage lens coatings, including anti-reflective coatings and mirror coatings. It may also affect some types of plastic frames. It dries the ophthalmic frame out which leads to cracking.

Your eyes can easily be damaged by pollutants and sunlight
If your eye color is blue green or gray you are at a higher risk Also adding to a higher risk is if your pupil size is larger ( your eye doctor can measure this)
Check your medications for some can cause the eye to be more sensitive to sunlight
Example: Certain antibiotics, like tetracycline and doxycycline
Diseases such as diabetes, glaucoma, and cataracts can make you more susceptible to the effects of sunlight
To protect your eyes from the sun there were clip on sunglasses
Transitions lenses
Mirror coatings
Polarized lenses

For the best protection of your eyes
Here are my recommendations
Best sunglasses lens color in my experience for all around sun protection is called a G15 grey
Tip if you’re trying on store sunglasses and can see your eye when looking in the mirror- not dark enough
Tip Blue color lenses actually allow more of the yellow spectrum of light transmission- which is harmful to the eye
Transitions lenses are convenient for going in and out but keep in mind they only get 1/2 dark as a true sunglass lens ( they get darker in winter than summer)
And unless you’re driving a car from the 70s, they won’t darken inside the car
Mirror coatings are great for driving into the sun and protecting against reflected glare

Polarized lenses also are great for reflections and glare, but they can affect your depth of field. Commercial pilots can’t use them because the instrument panels are polarized glass. And I’ve had reports that cars and trucks newer technology panels are difficult to see.
Don’t forget to wear a cap and having natural tears to refresh the eye from wind and perspiration is a good idea
Last the interior of a vehicle can reach temperatures over 130 degrees- permanently damaging lenses and frames Not a good idea to leave glasses in a vehicle

If when you are cleaning your glasses, the lens is wiggling or pops out; you should take the glasses back to where you bought them. With a plastic frame the lenses should have zero movement. A metal frame if the screws are tight, the lens should not have any movement. It means the lens was not made the right size.

My practice is a small business
The last time Trump was president 2016-2020 and raised tariffs -I absorbed the tariff cost.
Little did I know the following year, the pandemic would cause my business to lose 45% of income

If my suppliers raise their cost another 80% with the trump tariff announced increase
I apologize
I’ll have no choice but to pass that cost to you, the consumer

Congratulations on the birth of your child. March is a month when you see a higher number of births. If you doctor hasn't already advised you; you should have your eyes reexamined after the child birth for some changes in your vision may be permanent due to the pregnancy.

If you have a younger child who is receiving the first pair of prescription eyeglasses and they have concerns about wearing glasses i found three books that may help. You'd have to decide if they are appropriate. "Bear's Lost Glasses" by Leo Timmers "Charlie's Eyeglasses "by Margarita Del Mazo and "George Washington's spectacular spectacles- the glasses that saved America" by Selene Castrovilla
