SDG Doula Services

SDG Doula Services What is a doula? The Greek word doula means "woman caregiver". I truly believe every mother & father needs a doula!

A birth doula gives support emotionally and physically to the mother and partner before, during, & immediately following birth.

When baby is still high (-2 station or higher) sometimes a little nudge to open the pelvic inlet helps correct positional issues and encourages engagement. This is a great position to use with an epidural or when mom just needs a rest (Bonus: you can still do hip squeezes during contractions to help open the hips by pressing down on top of the upper thigh).

Make sure to pop those hips out forward and push those knees back as far as they will go.

This mama (a client of Julie’s) labored long and hard to get her sweet baby here, and this position helped bring baby down.

What are some things you did or are planning to do to help labor progress?

My go to tip is just keep moving! Changing positions every 3-5 contractions helps the pelvis, uterus, and baby work together.

Did you know AM and PM breast milk has a difference?

“Labeling pumped milk with the time of day collected may help maintain the valuable connection between breast milk components and infant sleep even when mother has to be away.”

I wanted to get this out there for those who may be using Mercy Hospital to deliver your baby. I am officially a Certified Birth Doula!!!

With that said, Mercy is allowing for certified doulas to attend births! If you or someone you know are in need of a certified doula please pass on this information. I also can attend birth center and home births. Please share!

From Mercy Birth Center:
▪️Mercy and MBC have remained vigilant in the responsibility of protecting our families and new babies during the COVID-19 outbreak.
▪️As other hospitals in St. Louis and the country are limiting visitors in the hospital and birthing center settings to a single visitor, we will continue to honor the partnership with doulas as valued members of the obstetrical team.
▪️This decision was not taken lightly, but in an attempt to reduce inadvertent transmission of the virus, we will request doulas consent to the same entry screening as all hospital visitors, remain present at their client’s bedside as much as possible after admission, provide their own PPE if desired, and limit their presence to the labor and birth unit.
▪️As always, in this fluid situation we ask for continued understanding and patience as situations may change based on safety needs.
▪️We are so grateful to administration who listened to our feedback and for the clients who become family and the community of birth workers we serve alongside. Together, our humanity will create the strength to get through the challenges ahead. ❣️

“For those of you looking to have your baby at home due to the pandemic of COVID:

***Higher risk families are better off in a hospital***

At this point, we're all weighing our pros and cons, right? Where is the safest place to birth right now? You choose a risk factor regardless of your choice...either home or hospital setting. Please please, do not expose yourself to anyone if you are having any syomtoms of sickness. Your midwife WILL be wearing masks and extra protective gear. Please keep your homes clean and wiped down at all times.

Taken from Missi Burgess-
Best Advice for ALL Pregnant People: Get your prenatal records in your own two hands. This will be necessary for any last minute changes in your birthing plan. As hospitals become more invested in caring for the critically ill, you may find yourself birthing at a different hospital or even out of hospital. *Everyone* should do this.

Yes, I am taking clients. You will need your records and you *must* be low risk (one baby, head down, no complications in this or previous pregnancies) and be willing to mentally prepare for out of hospital birth quickly. ;)”-Abby over at Grace Delivers Midwifery! Check her out!

“Would you want to go to a hospital right now? It’s pretty terrifying.”
