JEROME LOUIS KETTNER

The Mass of Christian Burial for Jerome Louis Kettner, age 91, will be 10:30 AM on Thursday, July 31, 2025, at St. Mary’s Help of Christian’s Church in St. Augusta. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 30, from 4-7 PM, and after 9:30 AM on Thursday, also at the church. Jerome passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 23, surrounded by his family at Quiet Oaks Hospice in St. Augusta.

Jerome was born on June 18, 1934, in Springfield, MN, to Anastasia (Gores) and Louis
Kettner. Jerome grew up in Springfield, only leaving the area to enter into the Army during the Korean conflict. It was during this time that he met Rita Kenning, whom he married on June 25, 1960, in St. Augusta, MN. Together, they made their home in St. Augusta and raised their ten children: Francis (Nancy), Martin (Sharon), Gregory and Paul Kettner, Theresa (Gary) Boeckmann, Margaret (Kent) Orth, Ann Dorn, Dolores (Andy) Theis, Catherine (John) Murray, and Veronica (Duane) Noggle. Jerome also had 15 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren, whom he adored with all his heart.

Following his discharge from the military, Jerome entered the plumbing profession as a journeyman. It was a profession that he took great pride in. Even during his retirement, he would pick up small jobs for family and friends. In addition to his full-time job, Jerome often helped with maintenance at his church and the parish cemetery. He was willing and happy to help anyone, at any time when the need arose, which he did often.

When Jerome had free time, he enjoyed watching Wheel of Fortune as well as the News. After Rush Limbaugh passed away, “The Clay Travis & Buck Sexton Show" took his place, keeping Jerome updated on current events. Jerome also enjoyed conversations with friends over coffee, likely discussing the current events that he had recently learned of. It was during these times with friends and family that Jerome’s quick-witted sense of humor was shown. He could put a smile on anyone’s face. He enjoyed filling his free time with his ‘Grand-Dog’ Mac and his ‘Grand-Cat’ Gizmo. Mac was with him to the end.
Jerome is survived by his wife, Rita, his ten children, 15 grandchildren, and 21 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Eldoris Schumacher and Elizabeth Johnson, as well as his sister-in-law, Diane Kenning, and brothers-in-law, Rob Warfield and Brother Lawrence Kenning.

Jerome is preceded in death by his parents, brothers-in-law, Myron Schumacher, Steve Johnson, Joe Kenning, and Walter Kenning. He is also preceded in death by his sister-in-law, Irene Warfield, as well as his son-in-law, Michael Dorn.

The family would like to thank Quiet Oaks for their amazing care for both Jerome and his family. In lieu of flowers, Jerome’s family would like donations to Quiet Oaks Hospice in St. Augusta.

MICHELE D. BUSCH

Michele D. Busch, of Foley, was born August 9th, 1950, in Sleepy Eye, Minnesota, to Keith and Viola (Grundmeyer) Heidemann. Michele spent her first few years of grade school in a one-room schoolhouse in Iberia before moving to her childhood home in South St. Paul, where she attended Immanuel Lutheran through 8th grade and graduated from South St. Paul High School in 1968.

After high school, Michele met the love of her life and soulmate, Byron. A few months later, Byron's draft card was pulled, and he was deployed to Korea as an MP. They corresponded by letter, and in 1969, at the age of 19, Michele flew to Tokyo, Japan, where they were engaged during Byron's R&R. They married on July 24th, 1971, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in South St. Paul. They lived in Highland Park, then Michigan's Upper Peninsula, before settling in Glenwood, Minnesota, where they had 2 children. In 1990, they moved to St. Cloud, where they raised their family, and in 2022, they moved to Foley, where they remained close to her son and his family until her death.

Michele began volunteering at the Coborn Cancer Healing Center after beating breast cancer, and she remained on the volunteer staff for the next 20 years. Her caring and compassionate nature made her a rock to countless patients over the years, and she was the face of hope and strength to many. Her favorite saying, "Every day's a blessing", will ring on in the hearts of those she loved and cared for, and those who loved and cared for her.

In August 2024, Michele began her battle with endometrial cancer, and her warrior spirit carried her through 6 rounds of chemo until she was declared in remission last March. Unfortunately, bone pain began a few months later, and bone metastases were detected in late May. Michele underwent procedures at the Mayo Clinic to help relieve pain and began chemotherapy in June, but the disease had proved too aggressive. She spent her final hours in the care of incredible nursing and hospice staff at Quiet Oaks Hospice, and went home to be with her Savior just before 5 am on Thursday, July 17th. Her family will never say she died of cancer; rather, she beat death when she passed through the gates of Heaven.

Michele is survived by her beloved husband, Byron, of Foley; her children, Kimberley (Mark) Lakosky of Chanhassen, and Cedric (Kelli) Busch of Foley; her grandchildren, Dathan, Taryn, Bennett, Zack, and Alex; her brother, Richard "Dick" (Noni) Heidemann of Burnsville, her sister Eileen (Tom) Spreeeman of Hudson, WI, and their children and spouses. She also leaves behind her dear Survivor Sisters, countless cousins, friends, and extended family members in both Minnesota and Florida. She was preceded in death by her parents.

A visitation in honor of Michele's life will be held on Wednesday, July 23rd from 4-7 pm at Miller-Carlin Funeral Home, located at 3013 Roosevelt Rd, St. Cloud, with a funeral service the following afternoon, Thursday, July 24th at 2 pm at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, located at 2555 Clearwater Rd. in St. Cloud.

Her family welcomes all to attend both the visitation and funeral service, and would like to ask those in attendance to acknowledge that July 24th would have been Byron and Michele's 54th wedding anniversary.

RICHARD LEO STURM

Richard was born on October 26, 1957, to Richard and Wilma (Adams) Sturm at the Fairmont Hospital.

Rick married Pam Salzl on April 18th, 1998.
Rick loved music from an early age. He was taught to play the piano by his mother, Wilma, and to express his gratitude, he taught himself how to play the electric guitar, alerting everyone within earshot how talented he really was. Rick ultimately joined an 80s rock band, growing his hair long and curly and playing all over central MN at various bars and nightclubs. With the guitar, came the cars. All his life, Rick was a motorhead; he loved his fast cars, especially American muscle. Rick had owned and repaired an assortment of Mustangs and a Barracuda over the years. Four wheels turned into two eventually, his latest Harley Davidson CVO was his pride and joy. When he had free time and the weather was good, except for a couple of those unexpected thunderstorms and a little bit of hail, he was out touring the countryside on the Harley. When Rick wasn’t out and about on the bike, he enjoyed small gatherings with friends and family, sipping on a little Pendleton and enjoying the moment.

Per Ricks' wishes, he will be cremated, thank goodness, because he would be rolling in his grave if his hair and beard weren’t trimmed just right for a viewing. A Toast to Rick, no pun intended, for family and friends will take place later this fall.

Rick was preceded in death by his father, Richard, at a very young age.

Rick is survived by his loving wife, Pam Salzl, his daughter Amanda Salzl, sons Richie (Katie) Williamson and Sean Williamson, his siblings Jaci (Ken Prior), Kandis (Dave Blomker), Bob Sturm, and Mike (Kat) Sturm, his mother Wilma Sturm, and his many nieces, nephews, and grandkids.

George was born the sixth of thirteen children at home in rural Holdingford on February 22, 1930, to Walter and Christina (Scheibel) Eiden. He graduated from Holdingford High School in 1948. In 1951 he enlisted in the US Army and served three years. He married Rose Ramacher on October 15, 1955, at St. Anthony Catholic Church, St. Anthony. Together they made their home in Holdingford, MN and raised seven children.

While working as a carpenter, George began experimenting with beekeeping in 1956. Self-taught, he started with just two hives. With the support of his wife, Rose, the couple built a successful commercial beekeeping business, growing their apiary to over 1,000 hives. By 1970, George was able to dedicate himself to beekeeping full time. His quality honey and beeswax products became favorites both locally and beyond. A member of the American Beekeeping Federation and the Minnesota Honey Producers Association for over 60 years, George enjoyed learning and sharing knowledge with fellow beekeepers.

George was a life-long member of St Mary's church in Holdingford, and a member of the American Legion. Staying active his entire life, he took long walks, was an avid reader and enjoyed visiting over coffee and discussing politics.

George and Rose enjoyed traveling. Their travels included Germany to visit their daughter, Lottie, who was an exchange student there. ELIZABETH ANN "LIZ" HABERMAN

Elizabeth Ann “Liz” Haberman, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully just before 11:00 p.m. on June 27, 2025, with her husband at her side. She spent the last week of her life surrounded by her children, grandchildren, sister, brother-in-law, and close friends.

Liz was born on March 3, 1938, in Holdingford, Minnesota, to Ambrose and Tillie Ebnet. She graduated at the top of her class from Holdingford High School and attended business school in St. Cloud before moving to Minneapolis, where she was soon followed by the love of her life, Roderick “Rick” Haberman. They were married on May 28, 1957, and recently celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary.

Liz and Rick’s life together was one of adventure, love, and enduring partnership. They met at the Colosseum in St. Cloud, where they danced—and shared their first kiss. Together, they raised seven children: Mark (deceased), Barb (Steve), Mike (Kay), Di, Larry (deceased), Keith (Virginia), and John (Lynne). Liz was a proud grandmother to many, including Steven (Gus), Natalie, Matt, Derek, Tim, Alex, Sarah, Joe, Emmett, Isabel, and Sam (step-grandchild), and had numerous great-grandchildren who brought her endless joy.

Liz lived a life rich with purpose and spirit. She was an at-home mother for over two decades, fully present in the lives of her children. Later, she returned to work, passionately teaching at-risk youth at C**n Rapids Junior High and Anoka Senior High. Liz’s heart for service extended to her faith life—she was a dedicated member of St. Stephen’s Catholic Church in Anoka, where she sang in the choir, as well as the Newman Center in St. Cloud.

Her love for music and singing was a lifelong passion. Liz first sang in the St. Stephen’s Catholic Church choir, then the St. Tim’s Catholic Church choir, followed by The Woodbury Chorus Orchestra—with which she toured Europe performing in Austria and Germany. Later in life, she sang at the Newman Center in St. Cloud as well as with the Minnesota Center Chorale (MCC). She played piano beautifully and once taught lessons to local children. Her voice and laughter were ever-present gifts to those around her.

Liz’s adventurous spirit defined her life. She backpacked in the mountains of Wyoming, Montana, and California; paddled through the Boundary Waters; camped in every season (including snow-filled Minnesota winters); and sailed with Rick on Lake Superior and through the Caribbean, the Bahamas, and the Sea of Cortez. She and Rick bicycled through the countryside of Ireland with their daughter Di, and later took a memorable road trip through both Scotland and Ireland with their daughter Barb and son-in-law Steve. She thrived in nature, in movement, in connection—and always with Rick by her side.

Deeply connected to the natural world, Liz was a lifelong advocate for the environment. She respected the earth and taught those around her to care for it as well. Her environmental consciousness was rooted in both her experiences outdoors and her deep appreciation for Native American values and culture, which she identified with and admired. She donated time and money to environmental causes, was an active member of the Sierra Club, and lived a low-impact life. Liz and Rick, with the help of their children and many friends, built a fieldstone house on 20 acres of property outside Holdingford, Minnesota, where Liz lived with Rick for the last several decades.

Liz also had a lifelong love of Minnesota sports—especially the Twins and the Vikings. She enjoyed watching games, keeping up with players and seasons, and talking sports with friends and family. For her, it was simply fun: a source of entertainment, energy, and good conversation that added color and joy to everyday life.

She is survived by her loving husband Rick, her children and their spouses, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, her sister Colleen (Doug), and her sister-in-law Sharon. She was preceded in death by her sons Mark and Larry; her parents Ambrose and Tillie Ebnet; cousin Ronnie Ebnet (Crystal), who was like a brother to her; and Rick’s parents.

Those who knew Liz will remember her as strong, smart, and passionate—athletic and independent, joyful and endlessly curious. Her presence filled a room, her laugh lit up hearts, and her deep love for her family was the center of her world. She made each person she encountered feel seen and cherished.

Liz's funeral mass will be held on Thursday, July 3, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Christ Our Light Parish, 11700 293rd Avenue NW, Princeton, Minnesota. Lunch will follow the service.

A Celebration of Liz’s Life will take place on Saturday, July 5, from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the family land—43894 115th Avenue, Holdingford, Minnesota—with live music, food, and a bonfire. In Liz’s honor, all are invited to sing, laugh, share memories, and celebrate a life well-lived and deeply loved. May her love for nature, her joy for life, and her boundless spirit continue to inspire all who knew her.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Liz’s memory to St. Labra Indian School (hhttps://www.stlabre.org) or The Wilderness Society (https://www.wilderness.org/)

WENDELL WATTS

Wendell Albert Watts, age 98, passed away on June 23, 2025. He was born on September 17, 1926, to his parents, Albert and Bertha Watts. He grew up on their dairy farm known as “Watts’ Brothers” close to Preston in southeastern Minnesota. He attended District 67 country school for eight years, followed by high school in Preston, MN, graduating at sixteen years of age. After graduation, Wendell farmed in partnership with his dad, Albert, and his uncle, George, on their 320-acre diversified dairy farm.

Wendell and Verna Sorum were married on June 6, 1948. They set up housekeeping on the home farm. Their first two children, Kristine and Karen, were born in 1950 and 1951.

Due to health reasons, Wendell left the farm in 1957. The family moved into Preston. He began working for the Preston Creamery Association. While in Preston, the last two of their four children were born, Garry in 1958 and Wesley in 1963.

In 1960, Wendell helped organize and became the first manager of a cooperative in Preston known as The Preston Marketing Association. In 1963, Wendell accepted the position of General Manager of the Waukon Cooperative Creamery in Waukon, Iowa. The family moved to Waukon in November of 1963, where they would live for the next 16 years. During this time, Kristine, Karen, and Garry graduated from Waukon High School. The girls were later married in Waukon.

In 1970, Wendell was instrumental in the formation of a new dairy farmer cooperative, Meadow Land Dairy Association. He was named Assistant Manager and four months later became the General Manager of the new Cooperative. He held that position for nine years until the farmer members of Meadow Land Dairy voted to merge with Wisconsin Dairies of Baraboo, Wisconsin.

Wendell, Verna, and Wesley, a high school junior, moved to Reedsburg, Wisconsin, with Wesley graduating the following year. The family moved so Wendell could work out of the Corporate Office of Wisconsin Dairies as Manager of the Cheese Division. He held this position until retirement from the dairy industry on May 1, 1994, after 39 years of dedicated service to dairy farmers.

During January of 1995, Wendell began another career. It was with the Tentmakers Youth Ministry of Minneapolis, MN. He worked as a Youth Ministry Consultant throughout the state of Wisconsin for eight years, helping churches find and hire a young person who would then be trained by Tentmakers to work as a youth minister with their young people. Wendell finally retired in January of 2003.

Because of Wendell’s deep love for his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, he served on every church board and most committees through the years. His passion was teaching high school Sunday School classes, which he did for 50 years!

After 32 years in Reedsburg, Wisconsin, Wendell and Verna sold their home and moved in April of 2011 to Sartell, Minnesota, near St. Cloud. The move brought them closer to family that lived in Minnesota.

Wendell’s hobbies included evangelizing, scenic photography, fishing, and gardening. He loved to raise tomatoes and ground cherries. In fact, he loved making ground cherry pie and sharing it with his friends at Woodcrest of Country Manor in St. Joseph, MN.

Wendell’s wife, Verna, preceded him in death on July 25, 2021. They were married for 73 years.

Survivors include Kristine (Dale) Hellickson of St. Cloud, MN, Karen (Tom) Gibson of East Bethel, MN, Garry (Debbie) Watts of Minnetrista, MN, Wesley (Ann) Watts of Hartwell, GA, eleven grandchildren, and nineteen great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, August 16th, at Abounding Joy Lutheran Church, 6000 County Rd 120, St. Cloud, MN 56303. Visitation 10 am; Service 11 am.

May God bless the memory of Wendell Watts among us.

KENNETH "KENNY" GENE FISCHER

Kenneth Gene Fischer, known to many as “Fish” or “Fishy,” passed away on June 16, 2025, at the age of 66, as a result of injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident involving a deer. Born on February 26, 1959, in Sauk Centre, Minnesota, to Edmund and Dolores (Schunk) Fischer, Kenny lived a life marked by unyielding determination, strong hands, and a heart always ready to serve.
Kenny graduated from Albany High School and built a strong work ethic constructing silos with Norling Silos, followed by a long career at Kraft Foods in Albany. He retired—fittingly—on his birthday in 2014.

On October 27, 2001, Kenny married the love of his life, Penny Martin of Foley, MN. Their life together was full of laughter, companionship, and the loyal presence of their beloved dog, Parker.

Kenny was a devoted Harley rider. After a life-changing accident in 1980, he didn’t give up—instead, he adapted a 1973 Harley-Davidson Shovelhead into a custom trike and hit the road again, chrome gleaming, paint vibrant, and ape hangers held high. The bike wasn’t just transportation—it was his roar, his resilience, and his soul. With the iconic “K Fish” plate and tattoos as colorful as his personality, he was a proud biker with a heart of gold.

A master craftsman and welder, Kenny could fix just about anything—from farm equipment to birdhouses. Always immersed in projects, he was quick to lend a hand to anyone in need. Whether welding a tractor part, repairing garden tools, or clearing snow from a neighbor’s driveway, Kenny had a gift for turning every challenge into an opportunity to help.
His love for nature ran deep—he hunted and fished with friends and family, especially enjoying bowhunting trips with his nephews in South Dakota and watching wildlife on his property. He encouraged youth to hunt, finding joy in seeing others appreciate and cherish the outdoors.

Kenny found joy in life’s simple pleasures: feeding songbirds, watching Minnesota Vikings games (with plenty of play-by-play commentary), playing cribbage, and always being ready for happy hour. He was a man of grit, generosity, and fierce loyalty.

He lived fully, loved deeply, and leaves behind a legacy of strength, laughter, and a hand always extended.

Kenny is survived by his loving wife, Penny, and their dog, Parker, along with siblings Linda Barker Morehouse (Scott) of St. Joseph, Jane (Ken) Wuertz of Otsego, Don (Pam) Fischer of Albany, Marilyn (Dan) Bueckers of Freeport, Tom (Brenda) Fischer of Albany, Tim (Elaine) Fischer of Sartell, and Gary (Tammy) Fischer of Albany; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edmund and Dolores Fischer.

A heartfelt thanks to Kenny’s lifelong friend, Ken Loehlein, who handcrafted Kenny’s urn as a loving tribute and for his final resting place.
