Static Stretch Before or After a Workout?
Static stretching before exercise exerts a negative effect on exercise performance and should not be included as part of the preparation routine for physical activity. Static stretching, which involves stretching a muscle for 20 to 30 seconds, decreases neural stimulation to the muscles and enhances relaxation. Therefore, static stretching should be performed after a workout.
Dynamic stretching has been shown to improve athletic performance before training. Dynamic stretches are active movements where joints and muscles go through a full range of motion. Dynamic stretches can be functional and mimic the movement of the activity or sport you’re about to perform. For example, a swimmer may circle their arms before getting into the water.
