🍂 Traditional Chinese Medicine & the Fall Season
Seasonal Element: Metal (金)
Fall corresponds to the Metal Element, which governs the Lungs (Fei) and Large Intestine (Da Chang). These organs are responsible for letting go—whether that’s releasing waste, stale emotions, or old energy—and taking in what nourishes you, like clean air and inspiration.
Energy of the Season
As nature begins to contract and prepare for rest, our own Qi also starts to turn inward. Fall invites reflection, organization, and clarity. It’s a time to simplify—to shed what no longer serves you and strengthen your inner reserves before winter.
🌬️ TCM Fall Health Focus
Boost Immunity: Strengthen your Wei Qi (defensive energy) with foods and habits that protect against wind and dryness.
Emotional Balance: The emotion of the Metal element is grief. Allow emotions to move through you rather than suppressing them. Journaling, breathwork, and gentle movement can help release what you’re ready to let go of.
🍎 Fall Food Therapy
Eat to Nourish Yin & Moisten Dryness
Focus on foods that are warming, slightly sour, and moistening:
Fruits: Pears, apples, persimmons
Vegetables: Sweet potatoes, pumpkin, carrots, daikon, turnips
Grains & Legumes: Oats, rice, barley, adzuki beans
Seasonings: Ginger, cinnamon, garlic, onions (in moderation)
Moistening foods: Honey, sesame seeds, almonds, mushrooms, seaweed
Avoid overly spicy, fried, or drying foods—they can irritate the lungs and skin.
🌾 Lifestyle & Mind-Body Tips
Practice Deep Breathing: Inhale fresh Qi, exhale tension. Try slow, rhythmic breathing outdoors in crisp fall air.
Let Go of Clutter: Just as the trees shed leaves, clear out physical and emotional clutter.
Keep Warm: Protect your neck and chest from cold wind—the Lungs are easily affected by Wind-Cold.
Balance Rest & Movement: Gentle Qi Gong, yoga, or walking are ideal.
Hydrate & Humidify: Moist air supports lung and skin health.
