We’re pleased to introduce Dr. Waisanen, a highly experienced Urologist specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of kidney stones, prostate health, urinary tract infections, incontinence, male reproductive health, and minimally invasive urologic surgery.

He will be seeing patients in our St. Ignace and Mackinaw City Clinics and performing surgical procedures at Mackinac Straits Hospital. 🏥

🚶‍♂️September is Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) Awareness Month 🚶‍♀️

PAD is a common condition when arteries become narrowed and reduce blood flow to your limbs. This can cause leg pain while walking, slow-healing wounds, and increase your risk for a heart attack or stroke.

💡 The good news? PAD can be managed!
✅ Healthy lifestyle changes (quit smoking, eat heart-healthy foods, stay active)
✅ Medications to improve blood flow
✅ In some cases, minimally invasive procedures or surgery

Don’t ignore the signs—early detection makes all the difference. Talk to your provider about PAD screening this month!

As students return to classrooms, let’s work together to keep our roads and neighborhoods safe:

🔹 𝙎𝙘𝙝𝙤𝙤𝙡 𝙕𝙤𝙣𝙚𝙨: Always slow down and obey posted speed limits.
🔹 𝘾𝙧𝙤𝙨𝙨𝙬𝙖𝙡𝙠𝙨: Stop for children and crossing guards. Never block a crosswalk.
🔹 𝘽𝙪𝙨𝙚𝙨: It’s the law—stop when red lights are flashing and the stop arm is extended.
🔹 𝘿𝙧𝙤𝙥-𝙤𝙛𝙛 & 𝙋𝙞𝙘𝙠-𝙪𝙥: Follow your school’s traffic flow plan and watch for kids between vehicles.
🔹 𝙋𝙚𝙙𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙞𝙖𝙣𝙨 & 𝘾𝙮𝙘𝙡𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙨: Remind children to use sidewalks, look both ways, and wear helmets when biking.

A little extra caution goes a long way in making sure every child gets to and from school safely. 💛

Everyone loves the sunny, warm weather, but overexposure to the sun and its harmful ultraviolet rays can be harmful to you and your skin. The skin is the body's largest organ and protects you against heat, sunlight, injury, and infection. This summer, protect your skin so it can protect you!

Here are a few simple tips:

🌞 Use SPF 15+ broad-spectrum sunscreen
👒 Wear sunglasses or a wide-brimmed hat

🚨 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐀𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐭 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐌𝐃𝐇𝐇𝐒 🚨

Carfentanil—a highly potent form of fentanyl—is making a dangerous return in Michigan’s unregulated drug supply and is contributing to a rise in overdose deaths. Since January 2025, there have been at least 11 deaths in Michigan.

This synthetic opioid is 100x stronger than fentanyl and extremely dangerous, even in small amounts. It was developed for veterinary use with large animals and not approved for human use. State health officials are making naloxone available to residents and organizations, to rapidly reverse an opioid overdose.

➡️ As a reminder, Mackinac Straits Health System now has a dispensary machine for Naloxone available in our Emergency Department.

Stay safe and informed by knowing the signs of an overdose.
