St. James Auxiliary Spreads Holiday Cheer to Local Veterans.

Each holiday season, the St. James Fire Department Auxiliary has a cherished tradition of adopting a family in need and brightening their celebrations with generosity and care. This year, the Auxiliary took a meaningful new direction by choosing to support the veterans at the VA Hospital in Northport.

Thanks to the dedicated efforts and donations from our Auxiliary members, and the generosity of our Fire Fighters and EMS team, more than $1,000 was raised in cash and gift cards. In addition, the group, along with the many donations from FD members, collected hundreds of essential health items and clothing, all to be distributed to local veterans who need them most. These donations will provide much-needed comfort and support to those who have served our country, especially during the holiday season.

Thank you to the St. James Auxiliary for their incredible commitment, energy, and compassion. The spirit of giving is alive and well in our community because of their example.

Thank you to all the members who donated. Itโ€™s amazing how much we can achieve when we come together to help others.

In recent weeks, Smithtown Department of Public Safety Fire Marshals have responded to numerous structure fires throughout the Town of Smithtown, NY.

With half of all home heating fires occurring in December, January, and February; we urge residents to take winter fire safety seriously.

Please consider and share the following winter and holiday safety tips:

๐Ÿชต Store cooled ashes in a tightly covered metal container, and keep it outside at least 10 feet from your home and any nearby buildings.

๐Ÿงฆ Keep anything that can burn at least 3 feet from any heat source like fireplaces, wood stoves, radiators or space heaters.

๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ Keep candles at least 12 inches away from anything that burns. Make sure they are in stable holders and place them where they cannot be knocked down easily. Consider using battery-operated flameless candles.

๐Ÿ’ก Inspect holiday lights each year before you put them up. Throw away light strands with frayed or pinched wires.

๐ŸŽ„ Water your Christmas tree every day. A dry Christmas tree can burn very hot and very fast.

๐Ÿ  Have a qualified professional clean and inspect your chimney and vents every year.

On Saturday, November 29th, the St. James Fire Department held its 103rd Annual Installation of Line and Desk Officers at Flowerfield Catering. We were honored to welcome many chiefs from neighboring departments, as well as local politicians who consistently support our mission.

A highlight of the evening was honoring Past Chief Marty Thompson, who celebrated an impressive 50 years of active service with our organization. Congratulations, Mr. Thompson! We deeply appreciate your dedication to our community.

In addition to the officer installations which included our fine Auxiliary, we presented awards to outstanding members from the past year:

- Firefighter of the Year: Assistant Chief James O'Connell

- **Company Awards:**
- Company 1: Chris Wrenn
- Company 2: Past Chief Dave Mills
- Company 3: Lieutenant Chris Topf
- Truck Company 7: Gavin Carney
- EMS Company 6: Jennifer Carney & Olivia Marshall

The annual Dr. Frederick Fischler Award, given to the EMS member who far exceeds expectations and shows unwavering dedication, was awarded to Jennifer Carney, who responded to over 700 calls, the majority of which were EMS-related.

Finally, the Annual Doug "O" Memorial Award recognizes an individual who exemplifies tireless dedication and leadership, much like Doug Oelschlager, whom we lost on September 11, 2001. This year, we congratulate Past Chief Roy Bradshaw for receiving this esteemed honor.

It was a tragic day in St James yesterday. At 3:15 pm The St James Volunteer Fire Department was alerted to a residential fire @ 178 Fifty Acre Rd South. A mother and son fell victim to the flames and smoke and a 3rd resident was transported to Stony Brook with smoke inhalation and burns.

The first to arrive were Asst Chief O'Connell from St James and Asst Chief Capogna from the Nesconset FD.

Upon arrival a working fire was confirmed that had engulfed the first floor and spread to the second. These 2 men were informed by a resident that two victims were trapped on the second floor. Unable to access the fire-affected side, they entered from the rear but encountered zero visibility and intense heat. With no hand lines in place yet, they decided to retreat and attack from a different angle.

Meanwhile, Command was established by St James 1st Asst Chief, Danny Keegan.

Once Engine 4-3-3 arrived, they split up, The SJFD Chief ventured to the 2nd floor via the interior stairwell, while the NFD Chief and Nesconset Firefighter Cacioli made access via ground ladder. Unfortunately, the 2nd floor conditions worsened, forcing both Chiefs and Cacioli to bail out.

Lines from multiple engines were stretched and firefighters pushed their way into the structure to knock down the flames. All efforts were made to reach the trapped residents but the fire load made it impossible.

Our thoughts and condolences are with the family and their loved ones during this difficult time.

We thank all the neighboring mutual aid departments for their assistance, sometimes it takes much more than a village.
