A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury caused by a bump, blow or jolt to the head and can also be caused by a hit to the body that causes the head and brain to move rapidly back and forth. Concussions affect thoughts, education, feelings, actions, and sleep. Get checked by a health care professional if you suspect a concussion.

In 2023 alone, the 8-12 year old age group had the highest number of child passenger fatalities in car crashes! They’re bigger and older, but they need protection, too.

Most kids need a booster until 10-12 years old, when they are close to adult size and can pass the 5-Step Test for a safe belt fit:
-Shoulder belt crosses between their neck and the end of the shoulder, not on the neck or face
-Lap belt sits low on the hips, touching the tips of the thighs
-Their lower back is against the vehicle seat without slouching
-Their knees bend comfortably at the edge of the seat, and
-Their feet are on the floor (they can sit this way the whole ride)

Be your big kid’s hero and don’t take them out of their booster too soon!

Don't forget to plan for your pets in an emergency! You can make an emergency kit for your pets and have items like food, water, medicine, treats, leashes, and toys. Include them in your emergency plans, and have important documents for them in with your own - like vet records.

Please see this news release from KDHE about 7-OH products. Be aware. Talk with your children, family, and friends and avoid using these products.

7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH) products are showing up in smoke shops, gas stations, and online. They're unregulated, addictive, and can cause serious health risks. KDHE is urging Kansans to avoid 7-OH, keep it away from kids and pets, and know the signs of overdose.
