Great information from our Local Fire Department

Stay safe and warm, St. Johns! With the temperatures dropping, we want to make sure everyone in our community stays protected from the "silent killer"—carbon monoxide (CO).

As we crank up the heat, please keep these vital safety tips in mind:

🏠 Keep Your Home Safe
• Check Your Detectors: Ensure you have CO alarms on every level of your home and outside every sleeping area. Test them monthly!
• Ventilation is Key: Never use a gas oven or stovetop to heat your home.
• Generator Safety: Only run portable generators outdoors, at least 20 feet away from windows, doors, and vents.

❄️ Clear the Snow
• Check the Exhaust: After a heavy snowfall, make sure your furnace and dryer vents are clear of snow buildup. Blocked vents can cause CO to back up into your home.
• Tailpipe Warning: If you’re warming up your car, make sure the exhaust pipe is clear and the vehicle is pulled out of the garage. Never run a car inside an enclosed space.

⚠️ Know the Symptoms
Carbon monoxide is odorless and colorless. Watch out for:
• Headaches and dizziness
• Nausea or vomiting
• Shortness of breath
• Confusion or sleepiness

If your CO alarm sounds or you suspect a leak, get everyone outside to fresh air immediately and call 911.

Stay warm, stay vigilant, and look out for your neighbors!
