World Asthma Day is an annual event that highlights the global burden of asthma and promotes efforts to improve asthma care and outcomes. In celebration of this day, the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) have chosen the theme “Make Inhaled Treatments Accessible for ALL”, emphasizing the need to ensure that everyone with asthma can access the medications they need that are essential for controlling the disease and preventing future exacerbations.
Healthcare professionals worldwide are called upon to ensure that every person with asthma is prescribed evidence-based, essential medication to help reduce avoidable morbidity and mortality associated asthma.

Practice Description and Care Philosophy
The Allergy, Asthma & Sinus Center is the growing medical practice of Dr. Paul Judge MD. Our specialty is allergy, asthma, and immunology. The goal of the doctor and staff is to provide medical care using the latest technology and knowledge in an old-fashioned, service-oriented manner. Each new patient is seen as an opportunity to build a relationship. Both adult and pediatric age patients that seek such care are invited to make an appointment. The practice has locations in Southwest Michigan and Northwest Indiana.
Medical problems we are specialized in treating:
Asthma - A chronic disease causing inflammation of the airways (tubes) that carry air in and out of the lungs resulting in shortness of breath, wheezing, chest tightness, and cough.
Allergic Rhinitis (Hay Fever) - Nasal irritation with symptoms of runny nose, sneezing, congestion and sinus pressure triggered by exposure to allergens. runny nose, sneezing, congestion and sinus pressure.
Allergic Conjunctivitis (Eye Allergy) - Itching, redness, burning or tearing caused when the eyes come in contact with an allergen.
Eczema - Chronic or recurrent inflammatory skin disease causing rashes on the knees or elbows (often in the folds of the joints), on the backs of hands or on the scalp. It begins in the first few years of life and is often the initial indication that a child may later develop asthma and/or allergic rhinitis.
Contact Dermatitis - An inflammation of the skin resulting from direct contact of a substance with the surface of the skin causing rash, redness, tiny blistering, and itch. Common examples are reaction due to poison ivy or nickel, due to jewelry. However, many unrecognized products found in the home and work environment can trigger this type of reaction.
Urticaria (Hives) - Red, itchy, swollen areas of the skin that range in size and appear anywhere on the body. They can appear suddenly, and may be the result of an allergic reaction.
Angioedema - Swelling in the deep layers of the skin, often seen with hives. Angioedema most often occurs in soft tissues such as the eyelids, mouth (lips) or ge****ls.
Eosinophilic Esophagitis - An allergic condition causing inflammation of the esophagus (food pipe) resulting in difficulty swallowing solid foods, abdominal pain, vomiting, and regurgitation. In children it can cause insufficient weight gain, and failure to thrive. It is due to delayed allergic reaction to specific food proteins.
Anaphylaxis - A serious allergic response that often involves swelling, hives, lowered blood pressure and in severe cases, shock. If anaphylactic shock isn't treated immediately, it can be fatal.
Food Allergy - Reaction resulting in sudden rash, itching, stomach cramping, throat tightness, or trouble breathing occurring after come coming into contact with certain foods. This happens because the immune system overreacts to the proteins in that food.
Insect Allergy - Reaction due to immune system response to stinging insect causing rash, itching, trouble breathing, and drop of blood pressure - shock. This can be a serious, life-threatening form of allergy.
Drug Allergy - Reaction due to immune system overreaction to a medication, which can trigger a severe allergic reaction. Drug allergy is rare, but is often confused with the much more common drug sensitivities which may produce similar symptoms, but do not involve the immune system.
Primary Immunodeficiency Diseases (PIDD) - A group of more than 300 diseases that are due defects in the body’s immune system. They are associated with recurrent, often severe infections and failure to thrive. Most PIDD are inherited in our genes, so they are present at birth, but they often do not become apparent or diagnosed until late in childhood, or even in adult life.
Test procedures we use as part of the evaluation:
Allergy Skin Testing - This is the most common, reliable and relatively painless form of allergy testing. A very small amount of allergens is introduced into the superficial layers of the skin by making a small indentation or “prick”. A skin allergy test determines specific allergens based on skin reactions which feel like a mosquito bite. Results are available within about 15 minutes.
Spirometry Testing - A tool used to measures how much and how fast you can inhale and exhale air. It is an important tool to diagnose and understand asthma severity and control.
Exhaled Nitric Oxide Test (FeNO) - A tool use to determine how much lung inflammation is present and how well inhaled steroids are suppressing this inflammation. This is primarily used monitor asthma control and helps to determine whether treatments need to be adjusted.
Oral Challenge Testing - This is the goals standard test to best determine an allergy after clinical history and other forms of testing are inconclusive. Small amounts of an allergen exposure, typically by ingestion, is done in a monitored setting. Challenges are done mostly with potential food or medication allergies. It is very important that this test be done by an allergist with advanced training to recognize the earliest signs of a reaction and have experience in treatment of reactions.
Patch Testing - A method of skin testing used to determine the cause of allergic contact dermatitis. Small disks or chambers containing different chemicals including metals, rubber compounds, fragrances, preservatives and sometimes medications are taped to a patient’s back and read for reaction after about 2 to 7. days. Reactions appear as small areas of localized inflammation and identify sensitivity to test substances.
Drug Skin Testing - A specific form of skin testing used to determine allergy to medications. Penicillin is the most commonly tested medication, but other antibiotics, local anasthetics, aspirin and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs), anticonvulsants, and chemotherapy drugs can be tested.
