Swallowing problems (dysphagia) can show up as coughing or choking with meals, throat clearing, a wet/gurgly voice, or feeling like food is stuck. Dysphagia can increase the risk of dehydration, malnutrition, and aspiration pneumonia—especially for older adults and people recovering from stroke or living with Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s.

Ascend Rehab's new blog, written by a speech pathologist at our Saint Therese of Woodbury senior community, explains dysphagia symptoms, how swallowing is assessed (including a videofluoroscopic swallow study/VFSS), and how speech therapy (swallow therapy) can help using exercises, safe swallowing strategies, and diet texture/liquid thickness modifications (IDDSI framework).
