Our second segment of Alcohol Awareness Month focuses on Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) - a complex, chronic condition that often requires both medical withdrawal management to safely detox and ongoing, supportive treatment to sustain recovery.

For pregnant and parenting women, this conversation is especially important. Pregnancy and postpartum can be a time of both hope and vulnerability, and navigating AUD during this period requires specialized, compassionate care that supports both mother and baby - without judgment.

While actively using alcohol, AUD increases the risk of serious physical and mental health conditions, including liver disease, cardiovascular complications, depression, and anxiety. During pregnancy, alcohol use can also impact fetal development, increasing the risk of complications such as Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD). This makes consistent, supportive healthcare and monitoring essential.

It’s also important to understand that alcohol withdrawal can be dangerous without medical supervision - and during pregnancy, that risk is even more critical to manage carefully. Symptoms can range from anxiety, nausea, and insomnia to more severe complications like seizures. A medically supervised withdrawal management program helps ensure safety and stabilization for both the individual and their pregnancy.

Recovery doesn’t end with detox - and that's where Wayside Recovery becomes a great next step. Ongoing treatment may include prenatal care, therapy, peer support, parenting education, and case management - all tailored to meet the unique needs of pregnant women and mothers. When care is gender-responsive and family-centered, it creates space for healing that supports the whole family.

Stay connected as we continue our Alcohol Awareness Month series—working to build understanding, reduce harm, and support every step of the recovery journey.

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) affect an estimated 1 in 20 children, yet many cases go undiagnosed or misunderstood.

FASD is a lifelong condition caused by prenatal alcohol exposure, and it can impact learning, behavior, physical health, and daily functioning. But with the right support, understanding, and early intervention, individuals with FASD can thrive.

At Wayside Recovery, we specialize in substance use treatment for pregnant and parenting women. We believe in meeting people with compassion - not judgment. Education and awareness are key to prevention, while stigma only creates barriers to care.

If you’re pregnant or thinking about becoming pregnant, avoiding alcohol is the safest choice. And if you or someone you love needs support, you’re not alone. We’re here to help every step of the way.

💛 Healing starts with knowledge. Change starts with us.

Wayside Recovery has an urgent in-kind need—and you can make an immediate, meaningful difference.

Wayside Recovery is currently seeking donations of new, unused bras and underwear in all sizes for the women entering our treatment programs.

For many women arriving at Wayside, they are starting over with very few personal belongings. Having access to new, properly fitting undergarments is more than a basic need—it’s about dignity, comfort, and helping someone feel seen, respected, and cared for from day one.

These small essentials can have a powerful impact during a vulnerable moment, reminding each woman that she is worthy of care and support as she begins her recovery journey.

If you’re able to help or would like more information on how to donate, please reach out to us at development@waysiderc.org.

Thank you for helping us provide comfort, dignity, and hope.

Alcohol Awareness Month creates the space for us to stand together against stigma and spread knowledge—because understanding is one of the most powerful tools we have in supporting prevention, early intervention, and recovery.

For the first segment in our Alcohol Awareness Month Series, we’re breaking down the three levels of unhealthy drinking: At-Risk, Binge, and Alcohol Use Disorder—because not all alcohol-related concerns look the same, and recognizing the differences matters.

At-Risk Drinking may not always raise immediate red flags, but it increases the likelihood of negative health or social consequences over time. This can look like regularly exceeding recommended limits or using alcohol as a way to cope with stress.

Binge Drinking is defined by consuming a large amount of alcohol in a short period of time—typically leading to a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08% or higher. While it may be normalized in some social settings, binge drinking carries serious short- and long-term risks.

Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) exists on a spectrum and is characterized by an impaired ability to stop or control alcohol use despite adverse consequences. This is where alcohol use begins to significantly impact physical health, mental well-being, relationships, and daily functioning.

By increasing awareness of these distinctions, we can better identify when someone may need support—and respond with compassion instead of judgment.

Stay tuned and follow for more, as we continue this series throughout the month, sharing education, resources, and real conversations that challenge stigma and promote healing.

Whether you're reflecting on your own relationship with alcohol or supporting someone else, know that help is available, recovery is possible, and no one has to navigate it alone. Reach out to us using our contact information below if you would like to explore options.

April is Alcohol Awareness Month—a time to bring visibility, compassion, and understanding to the realities of substance use and recovery.

At Wayside Recovery, we know that alcohol use disorder doesn’t exist in isolation. It impacts individuals, families, and entire communities—and for many women, it’s intertwined with trauma, mental health, and systemic barriers to care.

Recovery is not one-size-fits-all. It’s complex. It’s courageous. And it’s possible.

Every day, Wayside walks alongside women and their children—providing safe housing, comprehensive treatment, and the support needed to rebuild lives. We meet women where they are, without judgment, and help them find a path forward rooted in dignity, healing, and hope.

This month, we invite you to learn more, reduce stigma, and stand with those on their recovery journey. Because awareness leads to understanding—and understanding can change lives.
