Our second segment of Alcohol Awareness Month focuses on Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) - a complex, chronic condition that often requires both medical withdrawal management to safely detox and ongoing, supportive treatment to sustain recovery.
For pregnant and parenting women, this conversation is especially important. Pregnancy and postpartum can be a time of both hope and vulnerability, and navigating AUD during this period requires specialized, compassionate care that supports both mother and baby - without judgment.
While actively using alcohol, AUD increases the risk of serious physical and mental health conditions, including liver disease, cardiovascular complications, depression, and anxiety. During pregnancy, alcohol use can also impact fetal development, increasing the risk of complications such as Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD). This makes consistent, supportive healthcare and monitoring essential.
It’s also important to understand that alcohol withdrawal can be dangerous without medical supervision - and during pregnancy, that risk is even more critical to manage carefully. Symptoms can range from anxiety, nausea, and insomnia to more severe complications like seizures. A medically supervised withdrawal management program helps ensure safety and stabilization for both the individual and their pregnancy.
Recovery doesn’t end with detox - and that's where Wayside Recovery becomes a great next step. Ongoing treatment may include prenatal care, therapy, peer support, parenting education, and case management - all tailored to meet the unique needs of pregnant women and mothers. When care is gender-responsive and family-centered, it creates space for healing that supports the whole family.
Stay connected as we continue our Alcohol Awareness Month series—working to build understanding, reduce harm, and support every step of the recovery journey.
