Big news in Corcoran. An expansion has been approved that will add 31 new independent living apartments to the senior living community in the west metro.

Ascend Rehabilitation is proud to provide therapy and wellness services at the Corcoran community, with groundbreaking on the expansion expected this summer.

If you’d like it even tighter, we can combine “big news” into the first sentence and make it more direct.

Ascend Rehab occupational therapy assistant Silvia and Jim (an outpatient at our Saint Therese of Woodbury clinic) worked on a very special Valentine’s Day surprise, making chocolate covered strawberries for his wife.

Not only is it incredibly thoughtful, it’s also a perfect way to work on dexterity, range of motion, and everyday kitchen tasks that support independence at home.

Therapy doesn’t always look like exercise bands and repetitions. Sometimes, it looks like love… dipped in chocolate.

Way to go, Jim and Silvia!

Ascend Rehabilitation was proud to participate in an Adult Children program hosted this week by Saint Therese at its Woodbury location.

Amy Taylor-Greengard represented Ascend Rehab on the panel, focusing on the role of rehabilitation in supporting older adults and emphasizing that “everyone ages differently.” Her perspective reinforced the importance of individualized care and realistic planning as needs change over time.

We appreciate the opportunity to collaborate with Saint Therese and other community partners to support families through education and shared expertise.

January is National Glaucoma Awareness Month -- Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of vision loss, and it often has no early warning signs. That’s why regular eye exams are so important, especially as we age.

Routine eye checkups can help catch glaucoma early and protect vision. The good news is that when glaucoma is detected early, treatment can often slow or prevent vision loss.

Today we honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. His call to serve others, pursue justice, and lead with compassion continues to inspire us in our work and in our communities. May we all find ways to live out his vision through kindness, understanding, and service.

Noticing small changes in a parent after family time together can be emotional and confusing. Things like managing bills, everyday tasks, or social activities might feel different than they used to. These changes do not automatically mean a crisis but may be a sign that added support could help your loved one live more safely and comfortably.

After the holidays, many adult children begin noticing subtle changes in an aging parent. Learn what those moments can mean—and how thoughtful support can help.

Falls don’t happen by accident — and often the warning signs appear long before a serious injury.

At a recent Saint Therese Adult Children event, Ascend Rehab shared a simple but powerful benchmark: If an adult age 65+ takes more than 15 seconds to sit and stand five times, their risk of falling and experiencing a major medical event increases.

Understanding mobility changes early can help families take action before a crisis occurs. Read more insights from local experts in the latest Saint Therese Stories Blog: https://www.sainttherese.org/how-to-know-when-your-aging-parent-needs-more-care-lessons-from-local-experts

Swallowing shouldn’t be stressful—or scary. If you or someone you love coughs, chokes, throat-clears, or feels like food “goes down the wrong way,” it could be dysphagia (swallowing difficulty).

In our latest blog, Ascend speech-language pathologist Kathryn Wamstad, M.S., CCC-SLP breaks down:

Common signs and symptoms to watch for:
• Possible complications (like dehydration, malnutrition, and aspiration pneumonia)
• How swallowing issues are assessed (including a videofluoroscopic swallow study)
• Treatment options, from targeted exercises to safe swallowing strategies and diet texture/liquid thickness changes
