A Tribute to Dick Stahura
As May 8th approaches, my thoughts return to a dear friend whose end of watch came on that day in 2019: former Minneapolis police officer Dick Stahura. He was one of my closest friends, and I met him on a fateful night in 1978. Driving past Scotti's on 7th, I saw him dealing with a few unsavory men on the street. I pulled over and asked, “Officer, do you need assistance?” He replied, “Who are you?” I told him, “My name is Ron Henderson. I do security work and have a security company.” He welcomed my help, and that’s how our friendship began.
A month later, Dick helped me get a job at Scotti’s, and thanks to my experience and connection, I received the same pay as the officers. We became very close friends. Coincidentally, he lived in the same building as me and secured another job doing security there, where I earned the same wages as the officers again. Our bond was like that of brothers, and we were so attuned to each other that we often knew when the other was thinking of reaching out. I rode along with Dick countless times, and I was always ready to stand by him.
Dick served alongside his loyal K9 partner, Trooper, forming an unbreakable team that dedicated their lives to protecting our community.
I miss him deeply, but I find strength in practicing the principles I share with others. He was a Christian man, and I praise God for that. Each third Wednesday of the month, as I meet with the St. Louis Park Police Multicultural Advisory Committee, I can’t help but think of him. St. Louis Park has a commendable department with officers genuinely caring about the community. We’re always looking for new committee members, so if you live or work in St. Louis Park and feel called to join, please contact the St. Louis Park, Minnesota Police Department or send me a private message.
We shouldn’t judge all law enforcement officers based on a few bad ones. I have many friends in the field whom I deeply respect, and I salute those who wear the uniform out of a genuine desire to serve the public. Officer Dick Stahura was one of them. There was never a time we spoke that didn’t end with “Love you,” and that’s how I’ll remember him. Love you, Dick
