It’s Glaucoma Awareness Month. Often called the "silent thief of sight," glaucoma can damage your vision gradually without any early warning signs.

For many in the disability community, maintaining remaining vision is crucial for independence. The only way to catch glaucoma early is through a comprehensive eye exam.

Consider this your gentle reminder: If you haven't had your eyes checked in the last year, make that appointment today! Self-care includes taking care of your senses.

January is Mental Wellness Month. As we settle into the new year, let's remember that wellness isn't a one-size-fits-all goal. It's a highly personal journey.

For our community, "wellness" often means acknowledging the extra energy it takes to navigate daily barriers. It’s about giving ourselves grace on the hard days and celebrating the small victories on the good ones.

Let's take the pressure off. Instead of grand resolutions, let's focus on small acts of kindness toward ourselves.

What does a "mentally well" day look like for you right now? Share one thing that brings you peace, no matter how small. Let's share some ideas and support each other in the comments! 👇

Today, on World Braille Day, we celebrate the birthday of Louis Braille and the life-changing system he created.

In an age of screen readers and audiobooks, a common myth is that Braille is becoming obsolete. At Capabilities, we know the truth: Braille is literacy.

Just as sighted people need to see words to learn spelling, punctuation, and sentence structure, blind and low-vision individuals rely on Braille for deep literacy and independence. It provides privacy for banking, accuracy for medication, and access to music and math.

Today, let’s recommit to ensuring our physical and digital spaces are compatible with Braille technology.

Whether you are commuting to a new job, heading to a training session, or just enjoying the season, here are 4 quick tips to help you thrive this winter:

🥶 Layer Up for Success: The best way to beat the Ohio chill is with layers. If you use a wheelchair, consider a "pelvic wrap" or extra blanket for your lap to keep warm while moving.

🚗 Prep Your Commute: Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle with a flashlight, blanket, and non-perishable snacks. Pro tip: A bag of kitty litter can provide great traction if you get stuck on ice!

🐧 Walk Like a Penguin: When walkways are slick, take short, flat-footed steps and keep your center of gravity over your front leg. It feels silly, but it keeps you safe!

💧 Hydrate & recharge: We often forget to drink water when it’s cold, but hydration is key for immunity. Also, try to catch some sunlight when you can to boost that Vitamin D!

Stay safe, stay warm, and let’s make this a productive season! 🧣🧤

In 2024, Capabilities began providing Vision Rehabilitation Therapy (VRT) to better serve individuals with visual impairments.

Our goal? To complete Activities of Daily Living services that enhance safety and independence. We are proud to report that 100% of the participants in this new program completed their training within three months!

We are continuing to expand these services in 2025 to make them accessible to even more Ohioans.

Your impact in action:

Jason participated in the Montgomery Special Olympics and attended the LaComedia Dinner Theater with this group. When the Special Olympics table filled up, Jason chose to sit with two other families, sparking new connections and even exchanging phone numbers to stay in touch and grow new friendships. Jason works part-time and lives independently, resulting in a significant portion of his income being devoted to covering basic living expenses. With such an amazing experience and new friendships on the horizon, Jason requested a season pass (comprising 8 shows) to the La Comedia Dinner Theater. With funding from a CCF Mini-Grant, Jason was able to obtain a season pass and looks forward to seeing the friends he made at his first show, as well as making new friends.

We are thrilled to share our 2024 impact! 🌟

At Capabilities, our mission has always been "Connecting the dots" between people and their potential. This past year, our team worked harder than ever to remove barriers and build futures across Ohio.

We are proud to announce that we served 4,989 individuals in 2024! 📈 That represents a 20% increase in persons served compared to last year. From Athens to Toledo, and Dayton to St. Marys, we are making a difference.

A huge thank you to our partners, funding sources, and—most importantly—the individuals who trust us with their career and life goals.

Here is to breaking more records in 2025! 🚀

We are incredibly proud to spotlight Trey Prentice! After setting a goal to work in the fast-food industry, Trey worked tirelessly to navigate barriers related to autism and low vision.

It was an honor for Capabilities to provide job coaching to support Trey as he settled into his new role as a dishwasher at Krispy Kreme Doughnuts. We also want to give a huge shout-out to the Krispy Kreme team (especially manager Chris!) for being such a supportive employer.

Trey says it best: "I enjoy going to work because I like doing my job and being busy. Work is important because it gives you something to do."

Today, Trey is paying his own bills, navigating his city with confidence, and enjoying his financial independence. Congratulations, Trey! Your hard work is an inspiration to us all.
