Motor Vehicle Accidents and Degeneration

Motor vehicle accidents (MVAs) can leave lasting effects beyond the injuries you notice immediately like whiplash or bruises. At Chambers Medical Group, one of the highest rated car accident medical care entities in Kentucky, I often see patients whose accidents will speed up joint degeneration, a process where joints like the spine, knees, or shoulders wear down over time. This degeneration can cause pain and limit mobility long after a crash. How do MVAs contribute to this, and what can you do? I am Dr. Aaron Workman and I will explain motor vehicle accidents and degeneration.

What Is Joint Degeneration?
Joint degeneration happens when cartilage, the cushion between bones, breaks down, leading to pain, stiffness, and reduced movement. MVAs can speed this up by damaging joints directly or through inflammation. A sudden jolt from a rear-end crash, for example, can strain spinal discs or knee cartilage, setting the stage for faster wear. Over time, this can worsen your already degenerated areas, especially in the neck or lower back, which just so happen to be the areas commonly affected by MVAs.

How MVAs Trigger Degeneration
The force of an MVA, even at low speeds, can injure joints. Whiplash stresses the cervical spine, damaging discs and ligaments. This trauma can disrupt joint alignment, causing uneven wear and early degeneration. Inflammation from the injury also weakens cartilage, speeding breakdown. It is not uncommon for patients to have a new accident that damages previous degeneration they never knew existed. With each new injury the wearing of the joints will speed up. This will lead to persistent pain and stiffness. For example, a shoulder strain from gripping the wheel during a crash can weaken the joint, making it prone to arthritis. Knees or hips jarred in a collision may lose cartilage faster, limiting your ability to walk or climb stairs. These issues can linger, and numerous studies have shown that up to 50% of patients with whiplash injuries will suffer symptoms for years.

Risk for Adults
Older adults are even more vulnerable to a worsening of degeneration. Aging joints already have less cartilage, and an accident’s impact can really take a toll on existing wear. A minor accident may cause a 60-year-old’s mild osteoarthritis into a painful, reduced mobility condition. Younger patients are also at risk. Injuries in early life leads to early degeneration. This has a profound impact towards mid-life activities and will likely lead to more severe degeneration in older adults.

Managing Degeneration
You can take steps to slow degeneration after an MVA. First, you need to get checked. If you were in an accident, then your body and all its soft tissues have incurred trauma. At Chambers Medical Group, our job is to assess injuries and hopefully treat those injuries early. This is accomplished through various modalities and therapies designed to restore joint mobility and decrease your inflammation and pain. You can utilize an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory, like ibuprofen, but you should always check with your doctor first. If pain or stiffness persists, it may be time to have some advanced imaging performed to determine the level of damage you may have incurred.

Unfortunately, MVAs can accelerate joint degeneration, turning minor injuries into longer term chronic pain or arthritis. It is a difficult journey to take on your own, as multiple injuries can be hard to deal with. These injuries, added to mental stress, loss of work, loss of transportation, insurance stress and hospital bills, can all make dealing with degeneration a nightmare. Early care at a clinic like Chambers Medical Group can help manage trauma to your spine, knees, or shoulders. By addressing injuries promptly, staying active with therapeutic exercises, and monitoring symptoms, you can slow degeneration’s progress. With the right steps, you can protect your joints and stay mobile after an MVA.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome vs Cervical Radiculopathy After a Car Accident

Car accidents can cause many types of injuries. While injuries like broken bones or bruising seem obvious, others are more hidden but just as serious. Two conditions that can result from an accident are carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and cervical radiculopathy. They may feel similar at first (tingling, numbness, pain in the arms or hands) but they are two very different conditions. Dr. Deryk Harting of Chambers Medical Group, one of the highest rated car accident medical care providers in Florida, explains carpal tunnel syndrome versus cervical radiculopathy after a car accident.

During a car accident, the body absorbs a high amount of force very quickly. It is quite common for people to brace their arms against the steering wheel while the neck snaps forward and backwards excessively. These motions can compress nerves and inflame other soft tissues.

CTS is often caused by direct trauma to the wrist or inflammation of the median nerve as it passes through the carpal tunnel in the wrist. Swelling from direct impact, airbag deployment, or bracing during impact can cause this.

Cervical radiculopathy happens when a nerve root in the neck (cervical spine) gets compressed. This could be due to a herniated disc, swelling, or vertebral misalignment from spinal trauma. The nerve root sends signals down the arm, so pain and numbness can appear far from the neck itself.

At first, these two conditions can seem alike: both may cause pain, tingling, or weakness in the hands or arms. But their causes and treatments are quite different. Here is how they compare:

• Causes: CTS affects the median nerve at the wrist. Radiculopathy involves a nerve root exiting the spine in the neck.

• Symptoms: CTS often causes numbness in the thumb, index, and middle fingers, especially at night. Radiculopathy can cause pain, numbness, or weakness in a larger area including the shoulder, arm, and hand, depending on which nerve root is compressed.

• Diagnosis: CTS is diagnosed through physical orthopedic tests like Phalen’s or Tinel’s sign and confirmed with nerve conduction studies. Radiculopathy is evaluated with a neurological exam and confirmed by MRI or CT scans showing spinal abnormalities.

• Imaging & Testing: CTS does not always show up on standard imaging with x-ray or MRIs. Nerve conduction velocity (NCV)/electromyography (EMG) tests are the gold standard. Cervical radiculopathy often appears on MRI as a disc herniation or narrowing of the spinal foramen (the space where a nerve root exits the spine).

• Treatment: CTS is usually treated with splints, anti-inflammatories, stretching, and possibly surgery to release the carpal ligament if conservative care fails. Cervical radiculopathy treatment often includes physical therapy, chiropractic care, medications, epidural steroid injections, and in severe cases, surgical decompression of the nerve root.

• Prognosis: CTS has a good outlook if treated early. Surgery also has a high success rate. Radiculopathy can also improve with non-surgical care, but severe or chronic cases may lead to muscle weakness or persistent pain and ultimately require surgery.

A medical provider will often use a combination of history, physical exams, nerve testing, and diagnostic imaging to pinpoint the root cause. Early evaluation is important as waiting too long can lead to nerve damage that is difficult to heal or may become permanent.

If you have been in a crash and are experiencing hand or arm symptoms, do not assume it is just a "pinched nerve.” An accurate and correct diagnosis determines the correct treatment. CTS and cervical radiculopathy may seem similar but treating one when it is actually the other can delay recovery or make things worse. If you are having numbness, tingling, weakness after an accident- do not wait. Get it checked.

Summer Safety on Florida Roads

As the summer season kicks off, Florida’s highways and roads become busier and more dangerous. Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, the state enters the "100 Deadliest Days." This is a period when crashes, injuries, and fatalities spike, especially among teen drivers. With millions of Floridians and tourists hitting the road for vacations, beach trips, and family outings, summer driving requires extra caution. Dr. Deryk Harting of Chambers Medical Group, one of the highest rated car accident medical care providers in Florida, discusses summer safety on Florida roads.

Florida is home to some of the most dangerous roads in the country. U.S. 19, particularly the stretch running through Pasco and Pinellas counties, sees around 52 fatalities annually. This area recorded more than 160 pedestrian deaths between 2020 and 2022. Interstate 4, running from Tampa to Daytona Beach, is another hazardous roadway that is frequently cited in national studies for its high crash and injury rate. Counties such as Pasco, Hillsborough, Polk, Volusia, and Citrus consistently rank among the worst for both cyclist and motorist deaths.

One major contributor to summer crashes is speeding. Data from Florida highway safety agencies shows that almost 10% of fatal crashes between 2019 and 2023 involved speeding. During 2 months in the summer of 2022, over 2,300 speed-related crashes occurred statewide, resulting in 499 deaths and more than 2,300 serious injuries.

Teen drivers are at the most risk during the summer. According to AAA, more than 30% of fatal crashes involving teens happen during the 100 Deadliest Days. In Florida, teen drivers were involved in nearly 20,000 crashes and 83 fatalities during this period in 2024. On average, 7 people die each day in Florida from teen crashes during summer. Speeding, inexperience, and distractions play a major role in these tragic outcomes.

Distracted driving in general remains a serious issue. In 2023, Florida reported nearly 300 deaths linked to distractions behind the wheel. Every 44 seconds, a crash happens on Florida roads, and about 1 in 7 of these involve distracted drivers. Again, teens are particularly at risk with distraction contributing to roughly 60% of their crashes.

Summer weather brings another set of challenges. Extreme heat can turn a parked car into a deadly oven within minutes. Florida leads the nation in child deaths from heatstroke in vehicles, with 91 recorded since 1998. Hot pavement can also damage tires, increasing the risk of blowouts. In 2018, tire related crashes in the state caused 60 fatalities and over 200 serious injuries. Unexpected summer storms present another hazard with heavy rain, poor visibility, and slick roads, which all increase the risk of hydroplaning.

Furthermore, Independence Day –one of summer's biggest holidays– is also one of the most dangerous times for travel. From July 3rd to 5th during the years 2020 through 2024, Florida saw nearly 5,000 traffic crashes, resulting in over 1,700 injuries and 28 deaths. Some contributing factors to this include increased traffic volume, late night driving, and impaired driving. Alcohol related crashes tend to spike during the holiday period, especially in the evening and early morning hours.

AAA estimates that 57% of Floridians will take a vacation this summer with the majority traveling by car. Simple preparation can go a long way, yet nearly 1 in 5 drivers skip basic vehicle checks before a trip. AAA recommends inspecting tires, brakes, fluids, and air conditioning before hitting the road. Keeping an emergency kit with water, snacks, chargers, and basic tools is also advised. Polarized sunglasses help with glare and wearing shoes instead of flip-flops can improve driving control. For parents, reinforcing Florida’s graduated licensing rules and setting clear driving expectations for teens can be critical during the summer months.

Florida’s roads can be crowded, fast, and full of distractions during the summer. But with a little preparation and awareness, drivers can dramatically reduce their risk of an accident. Whether you are heading to the beach, a theme park, or a downtown destination, safer summer driving starts with smart decisions behind the wheel.
