🌼 Are allergies worse in the Ohio Valley?

Our own Dr. Sean Miller recently spoke on WLKY about why many allergy sufferers feel symptoms more intensely in this region.

🎥 Watch the full interview here:

According to Dr. Miller, several factors contribute to stronger allergy symptoms in the Ohio Valley:

🔹 The region’s river valley geography can trap air, mold, and pollen
🔹 Local vegetation like bluegrass, oak, birch, and ragweed produces large amounts of allergens
🔹 Warm temperatures and humidity encourage mold and fungal growth

If your seasonal allergies feel especially severe here, you’re not imagining it.

Dr. Miller also suggests steps that may help reduce exposure, such as using HEPA filters at home or wearing a mask during high-allergen activities.

When you’re dealing with nasal congestion caused by allergies, the first step is often over-the-counter allergy medications. These can help reduce inflammation in your nasal passages and alleviate symptoms. Some common options include:

🔹 Antihistamines: These block the effects of histamine, a chemical your body releases during an allergic reaction. They can reduce sneezing, itching, and runny nose.

🔹 Decongestants: These medications reduce nasal swelling, making it easier to breathe through your nose. They’re available in both oral and nasal spray forms, though nasal sprays should only be used for short periods (3-5 days) to avoid rebound congestion.

🔹 Nasal Steroid Sprays: These sprays help reduce inflammation in your nasal passages over time. They’re often used daily and can be highly effective for long-term relief.

ℹ️ Always consult with a doctor or pharmacist before using any medications, especially if you have other health conditions.

Nothing ruins a cozy winter vibe faster than that first "scratchy" feeling when you swallow. Since it’s officially cold season, it’s time to play defense! We’ve rounded up the best ways to keep your throat happy.
• Stay Hydrated: Water is great, but warm herbal teas and broths are the real MVPs for soothing irritation. 🍵
• Practice Good Hygiene: Clean Hands, Clear Throat. Germs love a handshake. Wash those hands and keep the sanitizer close! 🧼
• Gargle with Salt Water: The OG Remedy. If you feel a tickle, a warm saltwater gargle is a classic for a reason. It helps reduce swelling and keeps the bacteria at bay.
• Get Plenty of Rest: Rest > Hustle: Your immune system needs 7-9 hours of shut-eye to do its best work. 😴
• Avoid Irritants: Check the Air. Smoke and strong scents can make a sensitive throat worse. Keep it fresh!
If that scratchy feeling has turned into a permanent guest, it might be time to consult the doctor.
👉 Pro-tip: Limit the caffeine and cocktails for a few days—dehydration is a sore throat’s best friend!

🤧 Most people assume congestion comes from excess mucus, but it’s often caused by swollen blood vessels and inflamed nasal tissues that narrow the nasal passages. This swelling can be triggered by several common factors, leading to that frustrating blocked feeling.

Common causes include:
🤒 Colds & flu, where viral infections cause inflammation and mucus production
🌿 Allergies, as histamine release leads to swelling and congestion
😷 Sinus infections, often paired with facial pressure and thick mucus
🌬️ Environmental irritants like smoke, strong scents, or dry air
🧱 Structural issues such as a deviated septum or nasal polyps that physically block airflow

Can a sinus infection cause a fever? 🤒👃
Yes — and the type of fever can offer clues about what’s causing the infection.

Viral sinus infections (most common) may cause a low-grade fever early on. 🌡️
These fevers usually stay below 100.4°F (38°C) and often fade as cold symptoms improve, even if congestion sticks around.

Bacterial sinus infections (less common) can cause a higher or persistent fever. 🔥
Signs it may be bacterial include:
🔹 Fever above 101°F (38.3°C)
🔹 “Double sickening” — feeling better, then suddenly worse
🔹 Symptoms lasting 10+ days with no improvement

A fever means your body is mounting a strong immune response. 💪
