“From all walks of life, we enter the rooms of [Al-Anon Family Groups], find belonging and membership, and embark on a recovery journey. Our common bond is that we’ve all been affected by someone else’s drinking. Once we become a member of a group and participate in its business meetings, we are introduced to the links of service. These links form a chain—not one of command, but one that functions as a flexible conduit of information and ultimately leads the future of Al-Anon.”

“I have been contemplating the beauty of sunsets and sunrises recently. They are not like the light switches in my home that, when flipped, immediately plunge a room into darkness or flood it with light. Rather, sunsets and sunrises are gradual, slowly turning from daylight to darkness and vice versa.

“I realized my life has been like a rotation of the earth. I was born a bright, sunny, innocent, little being. As life progressed, I was gradually overwhelmed by darkness, learning and exercising the necessary skills to cope with the disease of alcoholism until my life felt like midnight.

“Coming to Al-Anon has given me tools to gradually bring the sunlight back into my life, should I choose to use them… I must exercise the patience to sort through my misperceptions and maladaptive skill sets so that I may stand fully in the sunlight of the Spirit. Recovery has not been like that light switch on my wall but rather like a sunrise—a slow and steady dawning of the light. Because I choose daylight, I will ‘Keep Coming Back.’”

“I like the idea I’ve heard in [Al-Anon Family Groups] that while I pray for the removal of a defect, attitude, or behavior, I can look for a replacement. This reminds me of the parenting wisdom of not telling a child what they shouldn’t do without suggesting what they can do instead. It is a solution-focused approach rather than a problem-focused one… Al-Anon has gently guided me to honestly look for the root causes of my shortcomings. If I am being judgmental, is it because I believe I know what is best for others and how they should behave? If I distance myself from others, is it because I am afraid of not being liked?

“Humility can replace many of my root shortcomings—arrogance, fear, and shame. I don’t know what is best for anyone else. I don’t know, nor can I control, the future. I can’t change the past, either, but I can humbly make amends.”

“Humility Over Defects,” “The Forum,” July 2025

Alcoholism affects the entire family, not just the alcoholic. As the years go by, the family members often try everything they can think of to make the drinking stop only to realize that no matter what they do, the drinking continues. Many families turn to Al-Anon for support. In time, they come to realize that no matter how much they love the alcoholic, they can only control their lives and that the alcoholic is responsible for his or her life. If you have tried and tried to help someone stop drinking to no avail, maybe Al-Anon can help you.

“I hadn't really believed alcoholism was a disease from which I needed to recover. My husband was the one who wouldn't stop drinking, even though I tried everything to make him. I scolded, shouted and cried. I pleaded, got thinner, made better dinners and hid bottles, but in Al-Anon, I learned that I could only change me.”

“The reason I will ‘Keep Coming Back’ to Al-Anon is because, as a runner, I know that continued practice is what builds strength and endurance in my mind, my muscles, and my cardiovascular system. Al-Anon is a life practice for me because that is how I will continue to successfully build character, strength, and mental and spiritual endurance in my well-being. When I run, that first mile doesn’t feel great every single time I hit the ground; however, by continuing my practice, I begin to recover more rapidly than if I were to stop running and try to start up again. Running more than that first mile after a long break would be awful, and I would feel the pain in my muscles for the next couple of days. If I want to continue to recover steadily from the effects of alcoholism in my life and continue my quest for more peace, love, and joy, I must continue my life practice of the Al-Anon program and attend meetings regularly.”
