🌟 Celebrating Women’s History Month with Lena Olive Smith 🌟

Meet Lena Olive Smith, a trailblazer and champion for justice in Minnesota! As the first Black woman to become a licensed attorney in the state, Lena broke barriers and paved the way for future generations. A graduate of Northwestern College of Law (now part of Mitchell Hamline), she used her legal expertise to fight tirelessly for equality and justice.

Lena made history again as the first female president of the Minneapolis NAACP, where she prioritized challenging discrimination and advancing civil rights. Her most notable case involved representing Arthur and Edith Lee, a Black family who faced relentless harassment and violence after moving into a white neighborhood. Despite the mobs throwing stones, f***s, and even poisoning their family dog, Lena stood by the Lees, representing them pro bono and securing police protection for their home.

A lifelong advocate for her South Minneapolis community, Lena dedicated her life to protecting and uplifting those around her. Even on the day she passed, she was due in court—proof of her unwavering commitment to justice.

Let’s honor Lena Olive Smith this for her groundbreaking contributions to civil rights, her community, and the legal profession. 💪⚖️✨

✨ Did you know? Black people have a rich history of practicing yoga in America dating all the way back to 1926. This is the September 1975 edition of Ebony Magazine, featuring the article ‘Yoga, Something For Everyone.’ The piece highlights Krishna Kaur, a Black yoga pioneer who studied under Yogi Bhajan in 1970. Bhajan recognized the unique challenges faced by the Black community in the U.S. and believed yoga could offer inner peace and healing from years of trauma.

Black people have been using yoga for decades to transcend the pain and chaos of daily life. As Krishna Kaur says, ‘The struggle is not on a physical level. It is on the level of the mind.’ 🧘🏾‍♀️💭

Let’s celebrate this legacy of resilience, healing, and mindfulness. Yoga is for everyone, and its roots in the Black community run deep. 🌍✨

Protecting our little ones from RSV starts with us! 💙 Did you know? Getting the Maternal RSV vaccine between 32-36 weeks of pregnancy OR vaccinating your baby under 8 months can help shield them from this common virus. 🩺 RSV might seem like a cold, but for kids under 3, it can lead to serious lung issues like coughing and wheezing. Let’s keep our babies safe by avoiding smoke, washing hands often, and staying extra cautious during winter and early spring when RSV is most active. 🌬️❄️ Together, we can help prevent the spread and keep those tiny lungs healthy! 💪

✨ Mental wellness matters! ✨

As parents, caregivers, and educators, let’s remember that mental health is just as important as physical health, especially for children and adolescents. 💙

Mental wellness is an internal resource that helps us think, feel, connect, and function. It’s an active process that supports resilience, growth, and flourishing in life. 🌱

Let’s prioritize mental health and create spaces where kids feel supported and empowered to thrive. 💪

🌟 Introducing our amazing intern, Claire! 🌟 Claire is a second-year Master’s student at the University of Minnesota, specializing in Public Health with a focus on Maternal and Child Health. We are so excited to have her on the Leap team! 🎉 Her passion for improving health outcomes for mothers and children is truly inspiring, and we can’t wait to see the incredible work she will do. Welcome, Claire! 💙✨

What interested you about Leap?
I took a class that Dr. Julia taught, and I was immediately drawn to her and the work that her and her team accomplish at Leap Pediatric and Adolescent Care. I am interested in the ways that health providers can better the well-being of patients beyond clinical care, so working with Dr. Julia allows me to further explore my interests!

Fun fact?
I have a corgi named Milo.

Hobbies?
I love to read, play video games, and cook! I am also a coffee snob and regularly check out new coffee shops across the twin cities. My current favorite is Carma Coffee in Northeast Minneapolis – their cold brew is phenomenal.

Favorite restaurant in the twin-cities?
This is such a difficult question because there are so many great spots in the twin cities, but I often frequent Momo Sushi in Northeast Minneapolis. The specialty rolls are incredible – the Angry Dragon roll is a must.

Where would you like to retire?
I honestly see myself retiring here in MN. Maybe that is my true Midwesterner speaking, but I really enjoy Minnesota.
