Last week we shared HEALTH CARE un-covered’s intro to their new Sunlight Report on UnitedHealth Group. This week, we wanted to share 5 things that are important to know about this first-of-its kind report on the sprawl of UnitedHealth Group’s reach as the biggest healthcare conglomerate in the world.

Additionally, if you want to dig deeper (or just really like CSPAN), you can check out highlights from the U.S. Senate’s recent hearing (featuring HEALTH CARE un-covered’s Wendell Potter!) about the report. Great news for independent pharmacies! The AMA’s House of Delegates has adopted a resolution that encourages PBM reform. They also addressed the issue of pharmacy deserts, making sure that rural and underserved areas still have access to pharmacy care.

Around 1.2 million Minnesotans depend on Medicaid for healthcare coverage, and around 10% of those people will lose their coverage with this new legislation. The bill makes major cuts to Medicaid, imposes work requirements on Medicaid enrollees, caps provider taxes that help states pay for the program, increases costs on low-income enrollees, and reduces compensation to states for providing care to immigrants with life-threatening emergencies. BOO 👿

Senior populations, including those living in rural areas, are particularly vulnerable to complications from common respiratory conditions. This legislation would help ensure seniors in rural areas and vulnerable communities can turn to their local pharmacists for testing and treatment services that can protect them from certain common respiratory conditions.

Congress must move quickly and provide seniors with Medicare coverage in states where pharmacists can offer testing and treatment services for conditions that, although common, can quickly become life-threatening if not properly managed. While Americans with private insurance, Medicaid beneficiaries, and federal employees may be covered, Congress must act to ensure access to essential pharmacist services for Medicare beneficiaries.

According to its creators from HEALTH CARE un-covered, the Sunlight Report is a “first-of-its-kind look at the nearly 2,700 acquisitions and internally created subsidiaries that make up UnitedHealth Group, the largest health care conglomerate in the world.

Named for its mission to bring light to UnitedHealth’s vast and often opaque business structure, this project compiles and analyses publicly available data in an accessible way, allowing the public to more clearly grasp the scope of the company’s reach.”

To watch a video introduction to the report from ex-Cigna exec Wendell Potter himself and see the key findings, head to healthcareuncovered.substack.com and find the post titled “Welcome to the Sunlight Report on UnitedHealth Group.”

Because of a law that the state of North Dakota passed back in 1963, there are no physician-owned pharmacies or chain pharmacies in the entire state. Even without any major chains, ND still has, on average, more pharmacies per 10,000 residents than any other state.

Mason Porta was one of two pharmacists in Lancaster, PA to die by su***de in June. These deaths have people concerned about the high stress levels that pharmacists in the industry are struggling through every day.

Dan Hussar, retired professor of the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and current author of “The Pharmacist Activist” newsletter, filed a formal complaint with the Pennsylvania Board of Pharmacy. The complaint urges the Board to investigate the working conditions of the stores in which the late pharmacists worked. It also voices concern about this high-stress environment leading to more mistakes in filling prescriptions, highlighting how the working conditions at pharmacies are a matter of public safety.

Our Story

St. Paul Corner Drug first opened its doors back in 1922. Since then, we have grown to become St. Paul’s premier, independently-owned pharmacy. We still have our old-fashioned soda fountain and continue to provide the highest quality pharmacy services you can find. Our staff has a combined 170+ years of pharmacy service experience. We pride ourselves in developing relationships with our patients and customers so that they may gain greater knowledge and understanding of their health and wellness.

But our story is not just about “we,” us. It’s about YOU—our patient, our customer, our neighbor.

At St. Paul Corner Drug we accept most insurance plans, so you pay the same price as you would at one of the bigger chain pharmacies, but gain more value. You will leave our corner store with your prescriptions, filled efficiently, in hand, along with the proper knowledge of how to use your medication accurately and safely. You’ll learn how to choose nutritional supplements that compliment your healthcare needs and prescription therapies, and you can have those products, along with your prescriptions, delivered straight to your door. You’ll even be able to rent or purchase medical equipment from us, as well as special order your favorite over-the-counter items that you can’t find anywhere else.
