Heart Safe Communities

Heart Safe Communities We have a goal of increasing the survival of SCA by providing education, CPR & AED training & placement of AEDs in our communities.

Heart Safe Communities helps communities and organizations do the following: educate citizens about sudden cardiac arrest and improving heart health; raise money to place AEDs in the hands of emergency medical service, fire and police personnel, and to make AEDs available in businesses, schools and other public gathering places; and train people how to use AEDs and perform CPR.

Did you know that CPR can be performed in outer space? It is reassuring to know that our astronauts are prepared in the event of sudden cardiac arrest❣️
Are you prepared? Hands-only CPR is easy to do❣️
If you witness an adult or teenager collapse, are unable to wake them, and they are not breathing normally- call 9-1-1 and push hard/fast in the center of their chest (appx 2” and 100x a minute)
The 9-1-1 dispatcher can provide guidance on how to do CPR❣️

Oh, the weather outside is frightful
But the AED, it's so delightful
And since we've no place to go
Let it Shock! Let it Shock! Let it Shock!

And the heart, it shows signs of stopping
And I brought me some pads for shocking
The breaths are turned way down low
Let it Shock! Let it Shock! Let it Shock!

We’re not saying goodnight
How I hate going out in the storm
But if you really hold me tight
All the way home I'll save yours!

NO NO, you’re not dying
And, my dear, we're not goodbying
But as long as you love me so
Let it Shock! Let it Shock! Let it Shock!

How I hate going out in the storm
But if you really hold me tight
All the way home I'll save yours!

NO NO you’re not dying
And, my dear, we're not goodbying
But as long as you love me so
Let it Shock! Let it Shock! Let it Shock!

If you have an AED- don't forget to get one last inspection in before the end of the year...

Does the big guy in red need to bring you a new battery or set of electrodes?
Is your ready kit filled up for the holidays?
Will your cabinet alarm alert you if you have a mischievous little elf that wants to sit on its shelf?

Thanks to early CPR and having an AED available a life was saved ❣️

This is a long post, but you will absolutely want to read it!

A couple of years ago, Chris Passauer approached us at Dugarel’s about placing an AED machine in our restaurant. At the time, we didn’t think of it as a priority, but we gladly accepted his donation. What we didn’t know was just how important that decision would be.

Last Thursday evening, a customer went into cardiac arrest, collapsed, and lost their pulse. A paramedic who happened to be there immediately began chest compressions. At the same time, a staff member grabbed the AED. Once it was used, the customer’s heart started working again.

That AED was here because of Chris.
That AED was here because of Chase.

About Chase
Chase Passauer was tragically taken from us on April 7, 2016, at just 23 years old. He was fatally shot while working as a law clerk for a criminal defense attorney in St. Paul, MN. Chase was a bright young man with a limitless future ahead of him. Loved for his charisma, quick wit, and deep devotion to family and friends, Chase was the kind of person who made the world better just by being in it.

In his early years, he was active in karate, wrestling, and baseball, where he excelled as a catcher and pitcher. As a teen, his passion for the game expanded into umpiring, where he became a leader with North Star Umpires, even training and mentoring others. He was also deeply involved in the Youth in Government program, which helped ignite his dream of becoming a lawyer.

Chase was academically gifted—he began college during high school, graduated from the University of Minnesota at just 21 with degrees in Political Science and Philosophy, and planned to attend law school that fall to become a criminal defense attorney.

Honoring Chase’s Legacy
After his tragic passing, family and friends created scholarships in Chase’s name through the University of Minnesota Foundation, supporting students who demonstrate leadership, community service, and the drive to serve others—just as Chase did. Later, the Chase Allen-Lloyd Passauer Foundation expanded that mission, awarding scholarships to Hastings High School students and launching a program to place AEDs in local businesses.

When the idea of the AED program came forward, the foundation reached out to the Hastings Fire Department for guidance and began working with Al Storlie. From there, partnerships formed with the Hastings Fire Relief Association and Allina Heart Health—helping make this life-saving initiative possible.

✨The first three AEDs went to Dugarel’s, The Busted Nut, and Starkson Family Life Celebration Chapel.
✨More have since been placed across Hastings, while scholarships continue to help students chase their dreams.
✨Through it all, the mission has remained: honor Chase’s life by helping others.

Last Thursday, that mission came full circle.Because of Chris’s efforts to honor Chase, a life was saved right here at Dugarel’s.

If you’d like to help continue this important work, donations can be made here:

Chris, in honoring your son, you gave our community a gift that cannot be measured. From the bottom of our hearts—thank you. 💙

Its National CPR/AED awareness Week!

If you see someone collapse and stop breathing- call 9-1-1 (direct someone to get an AED if close-by) and start Pushing on their chest Hard and Fast!

Hands-only CPR is easy to do and can save a life! But it's important that you recognize the signs of Sudden Cardiac Arrest early and begin CPR quickly!

Immediate CPR can double or triple a cardiac arrest victim’s chance of survival. Be a hero in your community by learning the two simple steps of Hands-Only CPR.

If you see a teen or adult collapse, call 911 and push hard and fast in the center of the chest.

On or off the field, we are all part of the same team when it comes to performing CPR and using an AED. We salute these heroes for stepping up in the time of need.

It is CPR and AED awareness week- so we thought we'd share some shocking statistics with you!!

Only about 50% of people are able to locate an AED in their workplace!!
If you needed an AED where you work, worship, learn, exercise, shop or play- how quickly could you find one??

For every minute that goes by, the chances of an AED working successfully drop by 10%

Every year in the US, more than 350,000 people suffer an out of hospital Cardiac Arrest and only 9.1% survive to hospital discharge!

Early By-stander CPR (can be hands-only) and use of an AED Doubles or Triples the chances of surviving Sudden Cardiac Arrest.

What are you doing this week to learn more about CPR and AEDs?!?!

Allina Heart Safe Communities is happy to announce the return of our Employee Charitable Giving AED Grant in 2023.

This grant helps to fulfill our mission of increasing survivability of sudden cardiac arrest by placing AEDs in our community where people live, work, worship, learn and play.

We know there are many areas in our community that are lacking early access to an AED and the means to support a purchase. To assist as many organizations as possible, we will be offering twenty $500 grants towards a new AED purchased through the Heart Safe program. To apply for the grant, please email a completed application to heartsafe@allina.com no later than May 1, 2023.
