🌈 This June, join us at ANCDS as we celebrate PRIDE Month! Let's take a moment to acknowledge and support the LGBTQIA+ community by raising awareness and advocating for equity, inclusion, and equality for all individuals. Together, we can honor diversity, courage, and self-expression.

As specialists in neurogenic communication disorders, we understand the unique challenges many face in accessing inclusive and equitable healthcare. We encourage everyone to share resources and information that highlight the importance of inclusivity and understanding in communication science and disorders. ANCDS highlights an important resource for clinicians:

This paper addresses the urgent need for culturally competent neuropsychological assessment practices with Japanese and Japanese-American individuals in the U.S. Using the ECLECTIC framework, the authors provide actionable recommendations for clinicians to enhance fairness, accessibility, and validity in assessment contexts.

Key outcomes relevant to clinicians discussed in the manuscript are:

-Cultural influences on test performance, communication styles, and health care access
-Guidance on working with multigenerational and bilingual Japanese-American patients
-Recommendations for teleneuropsychology and test selection by cognitive domain
-A comprehensive list of translated and normed assessments for Japanese speakers

As our field grows increasingly diverse, ANCDS encourages all clinicians to engage with resources like this to advance culturally informed care.

πŸš€ Spotlight on ALS Research! 🌟

To conclude our month of highlighting research on ALS, we highlight a study
on caregiver burden. This study was published in BMJ Open and was titled β€œCaregiver burden and associated factors among primary caregivers of patients with ALS in home care: a cross-sectional survey study.” DOI: 10.1136/bmjopen-2021-050185

A recent study on caregivers of ALS patients highlighted some crucial findings regarding caregiver burden. It involved 120 caregiver-patient pairs and aimed to uncover what factors impact the stress experienced by caregivers. Key Findings: Higher Anxiety Index (AI) scores among caregivers are linked to increased personal, role, and overall burden. Caregivers with limited knowledge about ALS reported significantly greater stress compared to those well-informed. Caregiver burden is heavily influenced by anxiety levels and understanding of the disease.

This study shows that disease knowledge and AI scores are key predictors of caregiver burden in ALS.

Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) communities are among the fastest-growing older adult populations in the U.S.β€”but face critical barriers to Alzheimer's care.

This new study by the NYU Center for the Study of Asian American Health takes a community-engaged approach to identify research priorities for addressing Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (AD/ADRD) in AANHPI communities.

Through key informant interviews and a modified Delphi consensus process with community leaders, three top priority areas emerged:

-The need for culturally and linguistically tailored AD/ADRD education
-Structural barriers to accessing care within the healthcare system
-The central role of social support and community networks

The findings underscore the power of community-academic partnerships to shape meaningful, equity-driven research agendasβ€”and the urgent need to develop inclusive resources that reflect the lived realities of AANHPI older adults and caregivers.
