August is Summer Sun Safety Month!

At Summit Hill Senior Living, we love seeing our residents enjoy everything summer has to offer — from gardening and outdoor strolls to relaxing in the fresh air. As we celebrate the season, we’re also raising awareness about the importance of sun safety, especially for older adults.

As we age, our skin becomes more sensitive to sun exposure, increasing the risk of conditions like skin cancer, dehydration, and heat exhaustion. To help everyone stay safe and comfortable, we’re sharing a few simple tips:

Sun Safety Tips for Seniors:
• Avoid direct sun exposure between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when UV rays are strongest
• Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher before heading outside
• Wear lightweight clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, and UV-protective sunglasses
• Stay well-hydrated by drinking water throughout the day
• Seek shade during outdoor activities whenever possible
• Take regular breaks indoors to cool down and rest

A huge thank you to Go Fishing MN for another amazing season out on the water — we couldn’t have asked for better weather! After a peaceful morning of casting lines and soaking up the sun, we returned home just in time for our annual fish fry, hosted by none other than residents Greg and Tom!

But the day didn’t end there. We made sure to get back outside and check in on our thriving garden.

From fresh catches to fresh veggies, it was a busy and fulfilling day filled with laughter, community, and summer fun here at Summit Hill Senior Living!

Today, we honor Juneteenth — a day of freedom, reflection, and resilience.

At Summit Hill Senior Living, we recognize the significance of June 19, 1865 — the day when the last enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas were informed of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

Juneteenth is a powerful reminder of the ongoing journey toward equality and justice. It's a day to celebrate African American history, culture, and the enduring strength of a community that continues to shape our nation.

🌿🐝 A Day of Discovery at the Bell Museum! 🐾🔬

Summit Hill residents recently took a fascinating trip to the University of Minnesota’s Bell Museum — a place where the story of life unfolds, from its mysterious origins to the incredible diversity of nature we see today.

One of the highlights? The interactive Touch & See Lab, where residents got hands-on with natural history specimens — including 10,000-year-old fossils, living plants and animals, and even a peek at the museum’s own honeybee hives right outside the window! 🐝🌱

It was more than just a visit — it was an experience. Holding and observing these specimens up close brought a whole new level of connection and curiosity. A truly unforgettable outing that left us all inspired and amazed!
