Self regulation is key to self care. Simple things can work wonders: laying on the floor can help you feel less overstimulated and overwhelmed. And putting an icepack on your chest, neck or wrist can help you calm down when you're anxious. It even helps to dip your face briefly into a bowl of ice water!

Social media can connect us to each other, make us laugh, and help us learn - but it can also have a big downside for mental health. Research shows a connection between high social media use and depression, body image issues, sleep concerns, self harm, low self esteem, and cyber bullying. Setting healthy boundaries around screen time can improve subjective wellbeing in as little as a month.

Sports can be beneficial for mental health - they can lower stress hormones, improve mood and focus, and help manage symptoms of mental illness. But among elite athletes or in high-pressure settings, sports can also have negative effects and be correlated with eating disorders, anxiety and burnout.

If you enjoy playing sports, go for it! Enjoy the boosts to your mental and physical health. But if you're in a competitive environment, make sure to take care of yourself, and don't forget that you're a whole person too - not just an athlete.
