“After 30+ years in many corporate roles, I’m fortunate to be at a point in my life where I can fill my time with a mix of hands-on philanthropy and service on boards. When I met Social Venture Partners Minnesota at a “Taste of” breakfast, I found a way I could do good work, learn things that would make my box bigger, and be part of a new community. I have relationships with partners and nonprofit leaders I never would have without SVP.

For my first project, I was the lead partner on an impact team that worked with The BrandLab. Their work is with youth who come from different backgrounds, many of whom are first generation immigrants. It makes you realize how narrow your own experiences are and how wonderfully diverse the perspectives of young people are in the Twin Cities. Over time I’ve worked on several impact teams. At World Savvy, we worked to design a scalable organization structure. At Breakthrough Twin Cities, it was about diversifying revenue. At RECLAIM, we’ve worked on developing the board. Each one helped nonprofit leaders deepen or expand their organization’s impact, and they all stretched my brain and heart in very different ways.

The relationship building between partners and investees is both the most challenging and rewarding part of the work. Perceived power and trust are both at play. It’s understandable why nonprofit leaders might come to the table very tentatively. Sometimes when people expect you to behave a certain way, they see that in your behaviors, even if it’s not what you’re putting forward. So we need to clear all that stuff out of the way on both sides and make everybody feel comfortable that this is about shared learning. It takes a lot of listening and a lot of questions. The more time we can spend on that, the easier it becomes.

To go through what our world has gone through in the last few years, especially in the Twin Cities, and not feel like I’ve come to understand things in a different way, I’d be disappointed in myself and feel like we all failed, you know? So I appreciate the chance to become a more effective partner to people on the front lines doing such great work. I didn’t have a career as an activist. I didn’t do youth development work. That’s not what I did in my career. I have so much respect for the strengths that other people bring to the table and enjoy putting what I bring to work in new ways. The opportunity to learn from amazing people has changed me.”

✏️🍎Sub Plans Brew Day🍎✏️

We were so happy to have our teacher crew here yesterday to brew this special batch with us, set to be released August 27th. Sub Plans is a super crushable Pale Ale that is mash hopped with Cascade and has some late addition Lotus, Mandarina Bavaria, and Galaxy mixed in. Expect this one to be bursting with passion fruit, dank pink guava, and citrus zest.🤤

This beer is being brewed as a part of our Give A Flyer initiative and we had our teacher crew decide on where they wanted proceeds to go. They settled on two organizations: Project Success and RECLAIM. Both organizations are so wonderful and we encourage you to check them out and read more about the incredible work they’re doing!🙌🏻

Mark the calendars for August 27th and please join us as we tap this super special brew, Sub Plans.🍻

As many of us know, June is Pride Month and as the Twin Cities is wrapping up festivities we at Digineer are highlighting an organization we're supporting: RECLAIM!

RECLAIM’s mission is to increase access to mental health care for q***r and trans youth. This organization is one of the region's only resources where q***r and trans youth ages 12-25 can get financially accessible, specialized mental health care. As June is coming to an end, remember that the importance of mental health, especially for LGBTQ+ communities, is something to support all year. One way to help is to donate, either your time or money. Happy Pride!

We're still working to raise $2.5M for local organizations as a community! This Pride month, all round ups and donations at the front desk contribute to RECLAIM. Learn more about the SEED program and how to round up here https://buff.ly/3x4PDAr
Inclusivity is part of our core values at Arts + Rec Uptown. We are so happy to be part of a neighborhood that supports & celebrates the LGBTQIA+ community. RECLAIM Statement regarding Dave Chappelle at the First Avenue Theater

cw: su***de, violence, transphobia

In their 2022 national survey, the Trevor Project found that 71% of transgender and nonbinary youth experienced discrimination and 37% were physically threatened or harmed due to their gender identity. This discrimination and violence leads transgender and nonbinary youth to attempt su***de more than twice as often as youth who don’t experience discrimination or violence. Given this reality, RECLAIM spoke with leadership to express our concerns about Dave Chappelle’s show this evening due to his history of transphobic rhetoric that has directly harmed the q***r and trans community we serve.

RECLAIM is grateful for First Avenue’s support of our mission, including being selected as the recipient of proceeds from their 2022 Pride T-shirt fundraiser. Current misalignment with our organizational values means we are unable to accept financial support from First Avenue at this time. We look forward to continued dialogue with First Avenue and community partners as we collectively strive to make the world a safer place for q***r and trans communities.

Today is International Non-Binary People's Day!

Non-binary: An adjective describing a person who does not identify exclusively as a man or a woman. Non-binary people may identify as being both a man and a woman, somewhere in between, or as falling completely outside these categories. While many also identify as transgender, not all non-binary people do. Non-binary can also be used as an umbrella term encompassing identities such as agender, bigender, genderq***r or gender-fluid.

RECLAIM is sad and angry to learn of today’s Supreme Court decision that overturns Roe v. Wade. We believe access to health care is essential. Access to reproductive health care is essential. Today’s decision is an attack against people of all genders, including q***r and trans people, and their right to have autonomy over their bodies.

We are grateful Minnesota has protections in place that support the right to abortion, but we recognize the disproportionate impact today’s decision has on those who don’t have ready access to care or the resources to seek care in other communities or another state.

RECLAIM does not accept attacks against the autonomy of our fellow community members, and we will continue to stand with our partners in defense of the freedom of choice.

Happy Pride!
RECLAIM recently had a booth at Northfield Pride. At our table we have a button maker, and we create buttons with various flags and pronouns. It’s always a huge hit, especially with youth. We had a steady stream of young people, from elementary to high school age, who were excited to make flag and pronoun buttons for themselves and to share with their friends.

While one child was looking at pronoun buttons, their parent commented, “We haven’t really discussed pronouns yet, but we should do that.” The parent went on to talk about both binary and gender-neutral pronouns and presented options for their child to consider. Witnessing that conversation—an experience that wasn’t possible for me as a young person—inspires me to continue working toward a better world for q***r and trans youth.

The Trevor Project’s 2022 National Survey on LGBTQ Youth Mental Health found that 45% of LGBTQ youth seriously considered su***de in the past year—a 5% increase since 2020. The survey also found that 93% of trans and nonbinary youth worry about losing access to gender-affirming care due to current legislative attacks on trans rights. This underscores the need for mental health services for q***r and trans youth, and that’s why RECLAIM is here.

As our fiscal year comes to a close this month, we are preparing to expand services to deepen our care for q***r and trans youth. Help us finish the year strong by making a donation today. Members of our Board and I are pledging up to $2,200 in matching support for all gifts between now and June 30. Contributions of any size are appreciated.
www.reclaim.care/donate

Thank you for supporting RECLAIM’s work and our message that q***r and trans youth are loved, that they deserve to be their true selves, and that they are worthy to live full and proud lives.

Sincerely,

Ryan Fouts

Summer is here, and so is 🌈🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️! So what better time to talk about heat safety when it comes to binders?

Unlike sports bras, binders don’t always move with your body, and don’t come in as many fabric options with summer in mind. To make sure everyone has a safe and comfortable time in this desert heat, here are a few tips to make binding in the summer a little better:

- Size up if you can, and choose to wear a worn-in binder if you have one.
- Wear a light layer on top. Lighter materials and looser fits are better for heat dissipation.
- Plan your outdoor excursions for cooler parts of the day. Consider using a cooling towel.
- Since binders put pressure on your back, consider carrying a lighter backpack or one that shifts weight distribution to your legs.
- Hydrate! Drinking plenty of water and eating salty snacks is essential for everyone, but wearing a binder will make you sweat more. Anti-perspirant can help, too.

Heat related illness is one of the most common medical emergencies in Zion, but it doesn’t have to be. Happy trails!
