Caregivers of children and adolescents with mental illness often bear a substantial yet unseen load.

Family members, educators, and youth professionals commonly report persistent worry, fatigue, and uncertainty as they seek to meet the complex and varied needs of these young individuals.

NAMI Minnesota affirms that caregiver well-being is essential, not optional. To provide support, NAMI Minnesota is offering a free virtual workshop, Self-Compassion for Caregivers: Supporting Yourself While Supporting Youth with Mental Health Challenges, on Monday, February 2, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m.

This sixty-minute session is designed to introduce caregivers to practical, research-supported self-compassion tools applicable to real-world caregiving scenarios.

Amy Noelle will lead the workshop, drawing on her expertise in burnout mitigation and resilience development. As part of NAMI Minnesota's SuperWeek, this workshop complements a broader range of free educational offerings focused on mental health advocacy and support.

Further details can be accessed at namimn.org/superweek2026 NAMI Minnesota underscores the importance of caregivers prioritizing their own well-being as a critical aspect of sustaining hope and providing effective support for young people.

Numbers that should stop all of us in our tracks: 26% of adults living unsheltered in 2024 were identified as having a serious mental illness. Another 26% were living with chronic substance use disorders. When more than half of the unsheltered population is carrying a heavy clinical burden, this isn’t a coincidence; it’s systemic failure.

These aren’t projected figures--they're the results of a recent study from Kaiser Family Foundation:
https://www.kff.org/mental-health/a-look-at-the-new-executive-order-and-the-intersection-of-homelessness-and-mental-illness/

Behind each statistic is a person trying to survive without treatment, stability, or safety. Families searching for answers. Caregivers burning out. Communities overwhelmed and unprepared.

S&PAA won't wait for perfect policy fixes before we act. People need practical information now—something to cut through the maze of housing terms, eligibility rules, and levels of care.

That’s why we built the S&PAA Housing Toolkit: a straightforward guide to understanding levels of need, evaluating options, and navigating the fragmented housing landscape that so many families face alone.

If you’re trying to figure out what “supportive housing,” “residential care,” or “supervised living” really mean—or what’s appropriate for your loved one—this can help you take the next step with clarity.

Access the Housing Toolkit: https://sczaction.org/toolkits/housing-resources/ Please share—someone in your network needs this!

Leave a comment to tell us where you live and what the housing situation is like where you are. We're here to help.

**Embracing Mental Health and Wellness: A Holistic Approach**

In today's fast-paced world, mental health and wellness have become increasingly important topics of discussion. Prioritizing our mental well-being is essential for leading a balanced and fulfilling life. Here are some key aspects to consider when focusing on mental health:

1. **Understanding Mental Health**: Mental health encompasses our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act, and it plays a crucial role in how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices.

2. **The Importance of Self-Care**: Self-care is not just a buzzword; it is vital for maintaining mental wellness. Engaging in activities that bring joy, relaxation, and fulfillment can significantly improve mental health. This might include exercise, meditation, journaling, or simply spending time in nature.

3. **Building Strong Connections**: Social support is a cornerstone of mental health. Surrounding ourselves with supportive friends and family can provide a sense of belonging and acceptance. Don’t hesitate to reach out for help when needed; talking about your feelings can be incredibly therapeutic.

4. **Mindfulness and Stress Management**: Practicing mindfulness can help reduce anxiety and improve overall mental well-being. Techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, and yoga can enhance our ability to cope with stress and promote a sense of calm.

5. **Seeking Professional Help**: There’s no shame in seeking help from a mental health professional. Therapy can provide valuable insights and coping strategies tailored to individual needs. Remember, asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

6. **Creating Healthy Routines**: Establishing a daily routine that includes time for work, leisure, and self-care can provide structure and predictability. Balance is key; allow yourself time to recharge and engage in activities that nourish your soul.

7. **Educating Ourselves and Others**: Breaking the stigma surrounding mental health is crucial. Educating ourselves about mental health issues can foster empathy and understanding. Share your knowledge and experiences to help create a supportive environment for those struggling.

By prioritizing mental health and wellness, we can cultivate resilience, enhance our quality of life, and support those around us. Remember, taking care of your mental health is just as important as taking care of your physical health. Let's create a culture that values and supports mental wellness for everyone.
