Eyelid skin cancers like basal and squamous cell carcinoma make up about 5 to 10 percent of all skin cancers. The eyelid area is especially vulnerable because of its thin, delicate skin and is often missed when applying sunscreen.

How can you protect your delicate eyelid skin from sun damage? Glad you asked!

Daily Protection Checklist:

🕶️ Sunglasses – Choose wraparound lenses labeled 100% UVA/UVB (UV400) to block harmful rays and protect the eyelid area.
👒 Wide-brimmed hat – A 3 to 4 inch brim can significantly reduce sun exposure to your eyes.
🧴 Broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen – Use mineral-based sunscreen around the eyes and reapply every 2 hours or after swimming or sweating.
⛱️ Seek shade during peak UV hours – Try to stay out of direct sun between 10 AM and 4 PM.
🌤️ Don’t skip sunscreen on cloudy days – UV rays still reach your skin even when it’s overcast.

📣 Why this matters:
Eyelid cancers can lead to serious complications if not caught early. But with consistent protection and regular skin checks, you can lower your risk and protect your vision and appearance.

👉 Take action today:

1. Double check your sunglasses for UV protection
2. Keep a hat and sunscreen near the door
3. Make eye protection part of your everyday routine

Let’s raise awareness this UV Safety Month. SHARE this checklist to help others protect their eyes and skin too. 🌞

Think it’s just a black eye? It could be an orbital fracture, a break in the bones around your eye. 👁️💥

Eye injuries can look minor on the surface, but they may be much more serious underneath. Falls, car accidents, sports injuries, or being struck in the face can cause orbital (ocular) fractures. Without proper care, these injuries can lead to long-term vision problems, chronic pain, or disfigurement.

👀 Signs it may be more than a bruise:
• Severe swelling or bruising around the eye
• Double vision
• Difficulty moving the eye
• Numbness in the cheek or upper lip
• Sunken or bulging appearance of the eye

In cases like these, you need more than just an ER visit; you need a specialist who understands the delicate anatomy around the eye.

👨‍⚕️👩‍⚕️Oculofacial plastic surgeons are specially trained to treat injuries to the bones and soft tissues around the eyes. They combine expertise in ophthalmology with facial reconstruction, making them the right referral when the face and eyes are both involved.

👉 Don’t wait to get the right care.

Thinking of eyelid surgery? Make sure you're prepared. 🧠👁️

False lashes, mascara, and permanent eyeliner might seem harmless, but they can impact your surgery in unexpected ways:

1️⃣ Fire hazard: Residual mascara or lash glue can ignite under electrocautery, causing thermal burns to lashes, eyelid skin, or brows in the operating room
2️⃣ Infection & irritation: Lash adhesives may trap bacteria or cause allergic inflammation, raising your risk of infection pre- and post-op.
3️⃣ Permanent eyeliner complications: Eyelid tattoos can lead to pigment migration, granulomas, or eyelid margin issues, potentially confusing surgical planning or affecting healing .

✅ How to safeguard your results:
❌ Remove all false lashes, mascara & adhesive 2-3 weeks before surgery
✅ Ensure eyeliner tattoos are fully healed (several weeks to months old) prior to your scheduled surgery
💬 Always disclose any permanent makeup or eyelash enhancements to your oculofacial plastic surgeon
⏳ No touch-ups or new makeup within 2-3 weeks before surgery

Be sure to follow ALL pre- and post-operative care instructions from your oculofacial plastic surgeon to avoid risks and ensure best results.

💕 Double tap if you learned something new.

False eyelashes might give your eyes a bold, dramatic look. But they can also come with some not-so-pretty side effects. 👁️💥

From allergic reactions to infections, here’s what you should know before you apply that next set of falsies:

⚠️ Potential risks of false eyelashes ⤵

Adhesives used for apply false lashes have been linked to:
• Allergic reactions
• Blepharitis
• Blurred vision
• Chemical burns
• Dermatitis
• Erythema
• Swelling

False lashes also have a tendency to damage your natural lashes, contribute to eye infections and discharge, and even make it more likely for you to collect lash mites 🤮.

Oculofacial plastic surgeons frequently see complications from lashes and other eye-area beauty trends. When issues arise, the skin and structures around the eyes need expert care. This area is incredibly delicate and deserves extra caution.

✅ If you wear false lashes:
• Always remove them gently and completely
• Clean your eyelid margins regularly
• Avoid shared tools or expired adhesives
• Watch for redness, swelling, or tenderness and see a specialist if symptoms don’t improve

💬 Have you seen or experienced an adverse reaction to false lashes? Tell us about it in the comments and share this with your friends who love falsies so that they know the risks.

👁️ This historical photograph shows a woman with Thyroid Eye Disease (TED), a condition that causes the eyes to bulge forward (exophthalmos) and the upper eyelids to retract, often leaving patients with a constant wide-eyed stare and visible discomfort.

While this photo dates back decades, the reality of TED hasn’t changed for many patients today. TED is a chronic autoimmune condition that affects the muscles and tissues around the eyes, often linked to thyroid dysfunction like Graves’ disease. It can lead to pressure, double vision, pain, and long-term changes in both vision and facial appearance.

But what has changed is how we treat it.

💡 Oculofacial plastic surgeons are highly trained to manage TED, from relieving pressure and improving eye alignment to restoring eyelid position and symmetry. They work closely with endocrinologists and other specialists to deliver comprehensive, tailored care.

📅 On Chronic Disease Awareness Day, let’s raise awareness about TED and ensure no one has to live in discomfort or uncertainty without answers.

☀️ Soaking up summer? Don’t forget to protect the delicate skin around your eyes! This area is especially vulnerable to UV damage, which can lead to premature aging, fine lines, and even skin cancer.

Oculofacial plastic surgeons specialize in treating skin cancer around the eyes and performing delicate reconstruction after removal. They also help repair the effects of sun damage over time, because protecting your eye area isn’t just about today’s sunburn; it’s about long-term health.

✅ Sun safety tips for summer:
• Wear sunglasses that block 100% of UVA/UVB rays
• Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen (yes, around the eyes!)
• Wear a wide-brimmed hat
• Seek shade when UV rays are strongest (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.)

Whether you’re grilling 🍔, picnicking 🧺, or hitting the park 🌳, make sun protection part of your summer routine.

You want a natural‑looking brow lift without going under the knife.

The challenge? Droopy brows and forehead lines can age your expression.

We’re here to help. Oculofacial plastic surgeons specialize in the complex anatomy around your eyes and brows. Using any of the five FDA approved botulinum toxin injections:

▫️ Botox® (onabotulinumtoxinA)
▫️ Dysport® (abobotulinumtoxinA)
▫️ Xeomin® (incobotulinumtoxinA)
▫️ Jeuveau® (prabotulinumtoxinA‑xvfs)
▫️ Daxxify® (daxibotulinumtoxinA‑lomv)

They’ll create a tailored, non‑surgical plan (or advise surgical options if needed) and guide you through every phase.
..and injections aren't the only non-surgical solution that oculofacial plastic surgeons offer for brow lifting. There are also skin tightening and lifting treatments that are minimally invasive and non-surgical to help you achieve your new lifted look.

⭐ Your next step: Visit OculofacialSociety.org to find a specialist and take control of your brow lifting journey.

Imagine going to see an aesthetic provider to look and feel more youthful only to leave with facial paralysis. 😬

When an inexperienced cosmetic injector administers botulinum toxin (Botox®, Dysport®, Xeomin®, Jeuveau®, and Daxxify®), here's how facial paralysis is more likely to occur:

▫️ Incorrect Placement: Without detailed knowledge of facial anatomy, the toxin can land too deep or in the wrong muscle, injuring the facial nerve and causing paralysis.
▫️ Uncontrolled Spread: Poor dilution or injecting too superficially lets the toxin migrate into adjacent muscles, weakening areas you didn’t intend to treat.
▫️ Over‑Injection: Inexperienced injectors may use high doses “just to be safe,” but too much product can eliminate muscle function completely, freezing your expression.

Toxin-induced facial paralysis can be...

▫️ Temporary: You wait out the effects for weeks or months until the toxin naturally wears off.
▫️ Permanent: Rare nerve injury during improper injection can cause lasting damage.

How can you protect yourself from toxin-inducted facial paralysis?

It begins with how you choose a cosmetic injector. If you're getting injections around the delicate eye area especially, it's vital that you select an injector who has the necessary training and understanding of facial anatomy to ensure excellent cosmetic results with minimal risk of side effects.

One way to ensure the best results is to choose a member surgeon with the Oculofacial Society.

Oculofacial plastic surgeons combine ophthalmology and surgical training to avoid these pitfalls. We use precise techniques with FDA‑approved neurotoxins so you enjoy smooth crow’s‑feet and natural movement, not unexpected paralysis.

Ready for a worry‑free refresh? Visit our website at OculofacialSociety.org and click on our Surgeon Search to find an oculofacial plastic surgeon near you.

💬 Did you know about the facial paralysis risk with toxin injections? How will knowing this impact your decisions related to cosmetic treatments in the future?
